    md2lgyk I can't follow the rules

Why would you want to do this? If you want to use the file in a Word document, just insert or paste it in.

What you need to do is to run OCR (Optical Character Recognition) software on the .tif file.

The search term "free ocr software" may be of some help, but a caveat here: I do OCR work but only use paid for software. Even with this software results are all over the board mainly due to the quality (read scan resolution) of the original image you are working with. It is not uncommon for OCR to get some characters wrong or not pick them up at all.

If you have the images in hard copy, rescanning may get you a better image to work with, pay attention to alignment. Also really clean glass cannot be overstated.

Kofax Virtual ReScan is said to be excellent for improving already scanned images, but I haven't tried it, it is a paid software tho...

I currently use Acrobat Pro 9 and CVision's CVista package for my OCR needs.

Once you have added an OCR layer to the document, you can copy/paste into a text editor or word processor. That, and adding search capability, is what OCR is for in the main.

Best? I really don't have a list, I use Acrobat and CVista and they do what I need. Any decent OCR program will do, just remember it the quality of the scan that determines the quality and usability of the OCR the software produces.

Keep in mind when reading the various reviews and accuracy claims these products make:

Bottom line is the quality of the scan. And in my experience, once you have a good quality scan, properly aligned, the choice of OCR software is not nearly as important. *GIGO applies here in spades...

What I am talking about, what I do, what works for me is not conversion. It is rather, adding an OCR layer to the file.

What md2lgyk said in an earlier post holds: you can paste the image into a new .doc file and save it. For this, I use Open Office Writer, which is free. Once you have imported the image, you can export to PDF or save it as a .doc with Open Office. Then run it thru some OCR software to add the OCR layer. When that is done the PDF/.doc can be searched, and the text copied and pasted.

I suspect that the online converters are doing the same, but I don't know for sure because I handcraft each book I process and have never used those services.

If you only need to do this once, you can download a trial version of Adobe Acrobat, which is fully functional for 30 days.

Or you can try to attach the tiff file here in the forum (inside a zip file), if it is not too big.

I can try that tomorrow, but I am unsure if even Acrobat can recognize cursive handwriting fonts.

I'm sorry, it is as I feared: Acrobat could not recognize much of the italics script. The first few words of the document were recognized as
You would have to manually correct almost every word in the document.
