Anyone know of a good (hopefully free) software that can convert a regular music cd to mp3, and take and mp3 and convert it to a format that i can burn to play on a cd? new to all this and its very confusing. Is a standard music cd in .cda format?

You are correct, the format for a standard audio cd is .cda.

okay i downloaded the cd burner. but this isn't helping me. What i am looking for is how to convert a music cd to mp3, which i think i figured that part out. but how can i take an mp3 song from my computer and convert it into a format that i can burn to cd to play in a regular cd player(like in my car)?

i was under the impression that a cd player can only play mp3 cd's if it is a specific model that specifies "mp3 compatible"

If you burn it as an Audio CD, it will play on most CD players.

ok now i am completely confused. so if i take an mp3 cd and rip it to my pc, then re-burn these files to a cd, it will play? So if I can have .wav and mp3 formats on the same disc?

ok, so burning an audio cd, and burning an mp3 cd are to entirely different things. so its like the difference between and audio cd and a data cd, its just a different type of format for the cd. So if i burn an mp3 song(file) under the guise of an "audio cd" this will play on a regular cd player. But if i make an "mp3" cd, this is actually a different format of cd that will only play in an mp3 specific player.....correct? And I can mix file types when making the cd if i'm just making an "audio cd"....also correct?

Yes, you are correct. A CD with MP3 files is a data CD. Not all CD players are MP3 compatible. If your CD player is MP3 and/or WMA compatible, it should be clearly labeled as such. There is no way to make a non MP3 compatible CD player read MP3 files. Should you decide to burn an audio CD, the burning program will convert the MP3s, WMAs, or whatever you are using to the .cda file format then burn it to the CD. These discs will play in most CD players, some older CD players will not recognize CD-R discs though.

Is it a protected WMA file, such as the ones purchased from Napster or, if you ripped it with WMP, is the the 'Automatically acquire licenses' box checked in the Copy CD tab under Options in Windows Media Player (it's checked as the default)? Some 3rd party applications can't burn or play protected WMA files.
