Converting a videotape to digital?

My sibling was given a video project and was told that through proper hooking up of the wires that she could simply attach her video camera(take a small videotape) and get it to upload to the computer. But the only wire that could e hooked up between the computer an the video camera would not respond. The computer kept giving me a popup saying there was a malfunction and the computer could not read the device.


The video camera is a JVC GR-DVL805U. I have been looking online with very little success.

It looks like that device should have no trouble hooking up to a PC. From the manufacturer's site:

You probably just need to install the software that came with the device onto the PC you want to connect too. If you don't have the software, you can probably download it at http://support.jvc.com/consumer/product.jsp?modelId=MODL006260&pathId=26&page=1&archive=true I had a Sony brand camera not unlike the JVC one you describe, and my PC had a problem "seeing" it without some software installed.

Agreed. you need to use the firewire/ilink/IE1394 (they are all the same thing, ilink and firewire are just brand names for an IE1394 connection) connection and have some capture software. If your PC doesnt have a firewire connection you can buy a firewire PCI card for about £20. I think WIndows Movie Maker will be able to capture from a firewire device but you may need to confirm that
