What tool (preferably free) can I use to convert some old audio cassettes to cd? It seems like tapes are so oldschool that nothing addresses this. I'd like to preserve a few old tapes on CD.

    Any suggestions?

there's a tutorial here, but you can find many others floating around the web.
as far as free audio editing software goes, i recommend Audacity.

    hey man,

i have been converting cassette tapes to CD and mp3 for at least 2 years now. i know everything. (hehehe).

heres what i do to get my thing of the past (cassette) to the thing of today and the future (CD) & (Mp3):

1.First you will need a computer (Duh)
2.second you will need a soundcard (or onboard sound card, whichever), a stereo 3.5mm line in cable that you can buy from your local electronic store, decent speakers (for overall listening and testing your edited sound). third you'll need some software, i use cool edit pro 2.1 that i bought ages ago(dam good software) and last but not least a portable cassette player to play the tape from.
    3. plug in your stereo line in cable 3.5mm into the sound card (Blue Port, for line-in)
    4. connect the other end of the cable to the cd cassette player's headphone jack.
5.open your recording software such as cool edit pro 2.1 and hit record.
    6. press play on the walkman and your set to go! (you can even record from the radio!).
    7. edit the sound with the software to remove any hiss, crackles and pops etc.
    8. save the file as an mp3.
    9. burn with your favourite burining program.
