If anyone cares, I had some trouble downloading some online Flash videos. (see the whole sordid story here) Once I successfully finished that, I had an FLV file I had to try to convert so a non-PC person could watch it on their home DVD player (it has DiVX support). I tried at least 6 or 7 different converters and they all either crashed (such-n-such has encountered an error and needs to close), or they locked up and required the task manager to close 'em, or the program would simply close out of the blue with no error or message. A friend recommended an app I'd never heard of: A-One FLV to AVI/MPEG/WMV Converter. It's not freeware, but I figured I'd give it a shot. IT WORKED PERFECTLY!!! So- this is basically for the folks struggling with FLV files like I was; here's the download and info link: http://www.aone-soft.com/flv_to_avi_mpeg_wmv_3gp_mp4_ipod_converter.htm

I hope this helps someone as much as it helped me....

    Hi dlb,

I've done some converting of .flv files too. I've had success using the following programs: BienneSoft YouTube Downloader 2.1.6, AoA Audio Extractor 1.2.5, Freez Flv to Mp3 Converter v1.2, and Freez Flv to AVIMPEGWMV Converter v1.5. Hope some of these programs might be of help also. They are all free too.

I thought AVC only converted to mobile formats for PSP or iPod or cell phones that support MP4 playback. I did look at it, but I need to go to DivX/XVid from FLV with as few steps as possible. I was going to try AVC if nothing else worked.
Thanks for the suggestion. I'll be trying it this afternoon and I'll let you know how it goes! It was hard to find a trustworthy site to download it from, but I did eventually find it here.

I think I remember the thread (or another) and I suggested AlltoAvi (which is freeware) and I had used it to convert a small clip to xvid. It worked as long as I didn't try to push the audio too high a bitrate, 128kbps worked fine.

Would you like to see the results of the conversion from FLV?
    Code:

Its a really cute and interesting clip, you'll love it.

Heres the original for a comparision if you want:

Yeah, I've used this for MKV (Matroska) files and it worked great but I didn't know it worked with FLV files also; I'll have to try it.

I just used Freez FLV Converter and it worked, it was fast, but I ended up with an AVI that uses an offbeat codec. Most AVI files are encoded with DivX/XViD, but the AVI produced by Freez is MP42 (S-Mpeg 4 version 2) which I haven't heard of, and isn't the format needed; it MUST be converted to a DiVX/XViD file. Thanks anyway. Freez has it's place, and it's free (which is a good thing), but the quality of the converted file isn't great (there's a noticeable drop in quality) and it doesn't do DiVX/XViD.
