I'm converting LP's to wav and MP3 format. Any suggestions on software to reduce or eliminating static, pops, etc. I'm using Noise reduction in Audacity but have not been able to get it working satisfactorily. Maybe I'm doing something wrong. Any ideas?

I use noise removal under the effect tab.I take a sample(were there is no music) Then were it give you the more or less I have found the less works better. lot of times I have to try differnt spots.I do alot of voice recording and it works for alot of the background noice. let me know how it works,I've changed alot of cassette tape to CD's,and I have the turntable for the lp's but not set up yet.

    Chuck,

You're right, using Noise Removal>Less does the trick with a lot of time and experimentation. Sometimes the distortion gets to be to you. I was hoping there would be something that does not create as much, but if not, it is what it is.

I guess you have to record a lot of dead air to get an appropriate level.

    Thanks.

I used Wave Repair, which is specifically designed to deal with all that snap, crackle and pop, when I transferred my old vinyl. It worked v. well and got rid of literally thousands of crackles etc. Noise removal in that and all the other programs I’ve tried is tricky, because you can end up with a distorted sound after even a small removal. Wave Repair has a free evaluation period, after which the editing part of the program ceases to work, but you can still use it to transfer stuff onto the computer, eg radio progs that don't need editing. I found it easier to use than Audacity.

I'll give Wave Repair a try and let you know. Thanks

Is there any way to have the snap crackle pops in a visual form so you know what it is you want to remove from the rest?

goldwave works really well. I't not free - about $45US. I think they still have a trial version
It shows the waveform, which allows you to see a lot of the noise.

Wave Repair shows the waveform too. It was designed by someone who wanted specifically to deal with noisy old vinyl records, so you can choose exactly what kind of crackles you want to get rid of.
