Last wk I searched here for any word on how to convert (many:() PDF files to .odt format. Found lots of info re converting to Word but only a couple of posts re Open Office. They were a little vague (for me, a novice:confused) but I tried to install the program mentioned. I downloaded it but can't do anything with it. So, I tried to go back and find those posts 3 different times and cannot. They spoke of dowloading pdf2oo.2009.tar.gz, and going to Cagwyn.com if any problems, to download additional ("helper"?) files. Did that (I think...) Still can't do anything with the downloaded pdf2oo conversion program. Does anyone know anything about all this? I love Open Office so I no longer have Word (...another story), so can't convert to that. I did find a program I could buy but it's quite pricey so that's out for a (long) time...

OpenOffice can read Microsoft Word files. Just convert them to Microsoft Word documents, then you can open them in OpenOffice and save them as any file type :)

I do not have Word...is there anything else I can do? Maybe with this file I mentioned downloading? Thank you!

You don't want that, unless you are running linux. I suspect you are running windows.
zDawg32, the poster does not have Word so opening or converting a file to .doc is not possible on his computer.

goatnote, what do you use to open the .pdf files? I want to give you something that will work with the programs you have installed.

thanks for that info, zDawg, albeit a little late for me, LOL (i'm an XP Home, SP3 user)

i couldn't figure out OOO well enough & found all my MS created things completely unusable...i purchased Kingsoft Office (about $100 +/- which is WAY cheaper than MSOffice) instead. i may reinstall OOO because it's got a few more features than KO, but i'm relatively happy with KO, so i may not bother.

although, i only found PDF2Word worked for converting .pdf files (i found the actual conversions very rough and needed a TON of editing to get rid of a HUGE amount of blank space) until i got Foxit Pro which is thousands of dollars and hundreds of mb less than the equivalent Adobe program.

    thanks again, for the info.

edit: looks like i'm too late for your help either, plodr. all good info for the future, though.

So far, I see two solutions.
    1. Here is a free online converter but you must include your email address. I suspect they might email you the completed .odt file
    http://www.cometdocs.com/
    2. This trial of a paid program will convert .pdf to .txt Since OO can open .txt files, you could then choose to save the file as an .odt file

Thank you plodr. You asked what I am opening the files with: They are Adobe files on my desktop so I just click on 'em...is that what you are asking? I'm not sure what you meant by "they might have to email them to you" in your Ans.#1. But I'll try it. As for #2, I have tried opening them and 'saving as text' but I always get an access denied msg. V. frustrating. Maybe I'm not saving with the right path? I choose OpenOffice.org3, then program, then things get dicey. I tried a number of choices after programs, usually I end up with either 'desktophelpter' or 'resources' neither of which work, nor do I understand. I wish OOWriter would just show up on the list after program, that would work I would think. I don't care if these files stay pretty or keep their pics, I just wish I could make them OO file...

Awhright! Thanks so much plodr. Cometdocs worked great, right into oowriter, didn't have to mess with converting to text. Should have tried before I wrote last cumbersome post. Made my life a lot easier today, thanks again!

Good, I'm glad you found something that worked.
I just wanted to know if you were using Adobe, Foxit or Sumatra to open the pdfs so your reply was exactly what I needed to know.
