converting .wav files to mp3

I bought a digital voice recorder (Olypus VN-240pc) and can link up to my computer and download sound files for use. I can upload these to my website. But when I want to put them on a CD for someone else to hear, WINDOWS MEDIA PLAYER doesn't want to do it (sends an error message). I can do it in REALPLAYER but I was thinking if I could convert it to mp3:

*wouldn't it be much smaller for uploading to net
*wouldn't WMP be able to record it to CD for regular audio listening in a car or home CD player?

If i do want to conver them...how would I do that?
