I am looking for ways to cool my laptop which is an old machine running Windows XP SP3,Intel Celeron 2.66 G Hz , 512 MB RAM ,ATI Mobility Radeon 7000 IGP.
The temperature in idle state is not getting any lower than 56 degrees (in Celsius) and when i am working on it with 4-5 programs running its getting as high as 68 degrees. So you can say i am a bit desperate to get that temperature down.

Going through the posts on MG i have tried the method of passive cooling using a table fan and has also checked out some cooling pads with 2-3 fans. But i was just wondering if it is possible to under clock or under volt the CPU so that the temperature drop can be significant.
Attached file shows information about the CPU i got using CPUID.

Thanks in advance for any replies.:)

I had Program called NCH running on my old laptop which did the job well.

Hey chaimjm it seems that the program you are using is of no use to me as i am not able to change any settings on my computer. Also it asked me to install .NET framework which i did before installing the program.
So if you have any other suggestions it would be really great.

    Thanks

on vista there are options in the "power options" to underclock the cpu- not sure about XP. Underclocking probably isn't necessary- first take a can of compressed air and clean out the exhaust fan- next if you are feeling adventurous, make sure the cpu heatsink is seated correctly and put some AS5 on it. After that, but the laptop on a flat level surface. Cloth (pillows, laps) clogs the vents. You may consider elevating the laptop on some sort of risers (perhaps a few postit pads under the back grips.) Cooling pads are avalible, which both elevate (increases airflow) and feature exhaust fans- but make sure you read the reviews first, as quality/effectiveness varies immensely.
