copernic can't install toolbar

Copernic Desktop Search 2.2 is not able to install the search toolbar in the taskbar tray. When it tries, I see the contextual popup window with the Toolbars submenu highlighted then closed a number of times. It gives up after 3-4 tries and the type-in search box is never displayed.

I have three options:

1. Use a system restore and then go back through the uninstallation procedures again
2. Try to contact Copernic for support
3. Repair the Windows XP installation

Which would you recommend?

I've installed/uninstalled the application a couple of times to see if perhaps there was something there that would uncork. I've turned off all avg products, comodo, etc.

I've recovered from a fairly catastrophic error, else I'd just try system restore....

I was having severe troubles with system responsiveness. The apps csrss.exe and explorer.exe were regularly out of control. I followed Microsoft's instructions and deleted my corrupted profile (after backing it up), only to find that it wasn't backed up properly. I used getdataback to undelete most of the files.

Before that happened, I'd been deleting a number of apps, defragmented the hard drive, ran the CCleaner, installed and ran avg and-spyware (nothing but cookies), etc.

Apparently I've got something corrupted, big-time, as my HP printer installation seems to have disappeared as well.

 

On second pass, it appears that the printer is working-but because my profile was removed it defaulted to the fax.
