I have dvdrip. Backed up the dvd then dvdrip said to select software to burn. Downloaded dvdflick but once i selected the backed up dvd it turned into two files, audio and video. Dvdflick would not seem to burn it. So i selected the backed up dvd and used Sonic to record. It worked but only on my laptop and not my 360. 360 says its a multimedia disc and will not play it. I had some software that dvdrip automatically selected then it burned it. What am i doing wrong?

As Well as JPs link to how to burn and backup DVDs, I would try from his list Handbrake to rip the DVD to AVI, I would stick with DVDFlick and make sure you have latest version and this time have it create an ISO of the DVD, then burn it with ImgBurn (actually ImgBurn and DVDFlick are compatible and in the Project Settinsg > Burning menu click Create ISO and the Burn to Disk options)

To backup a DVD, I use DVDdecryptor or DVDFab6 to create an ISO file. I can then burn a backup copy or mount the drive using Virtual Clone Drive and convert to a different format (avi/mp4 etc) with Handbrake. All are free utilities and work well.

Hmmm, me thinks i know what i'm doing wrong. When i back up i'm putting it on hard drive instead of an ISO file. Think thats it? I'm trying it out right now. I have Sonic Record Now and there is no reason why Sonic can't work. Maybe backing it up on the ISO file instead of the hard drive will work.

that will work fine, as long as it's not a protected/encrypted dvd.

otherwise you will have to do what was stated above to crack the encryption (which i think is not so legal)

Odd. I'm using dvdflick and for some reason it will not recognize the dvd in the drive to back up. I can create a project but i see no options to back up the dvd. Any input? I've used dvdrip create an iso file and imageburn to burn to dvd and it worked. But now i wanna create a copy of Dark Night and dvdrip won't work.

DVD Flick is not a DVD backup program. That is why it won't work. Dvdrip is an old ripping program. It is no longer updated and can't handle newer copy protection schemes. This is currently supported and will rip the DVD to your hard drive: http://majorgeeks.com/DVDFab_HD_Decrypter_d5168.html After that, you can DVD Shrink http://majorgeeks.com/DVD_Shrink_d4020.html to edit the main movie or compress the DVD to fit on a DVD+/-R.

You can upgrade to DVDFab HD Decrypter Platinum which will do everything.

When a DVD is ripped to your hard drive, the end result will be two folders; one called AUDIO_TS and one called VIDEO_TS. This is totally normal and is the standard DVD file structure. The AUDIO_TS folder is normally empty, but it is still required (AFAIK). So, once the DVD is ripped to these two folders, you can use the "DVD Movie" option in either Ashampoo 6 or BurnAware to burn the movie. Both apps are 100% free (AShampoo requires free registration with an email address; BurnAware will install the 'Ask' toolbar unless you uncheck the boxes during install). If you rip the movie to an ISO file, use ImgBurn (also freeware) to "Write image file to disc". Whatever the scenario, be sure the file(s) you're burning will fit on the blank media you're using... meaning: make sure the ISO file or the AUDIO/VIDEO_TS files combined are under 4.3gb for a regular DVD, or under 8.5gb for a DL blank DVD. When ripping my personal store-bought DVD movies for archival backup purposes, I generally use DVD Fab Decrypter and use the "Rip main movie" option 'cuz I'm not interested in extra features, languages, menus, options, etc. This almost always results in a folder with the AUDIO/VIDEO_TS folders at under 4.3gb. Then I use AShampoo or Nero6.6 to burn the movie to a DVD. That's it!!! I'm not sure if the free version of DVD Fab has the "Rip main movie" option or not; I have the paid "platinum" version.

(actually, these days I normally rip directly to an AVI file with Apollo #1 DVD Ripper (not freeware) using the XViD/DiVX codec; my home DVD player supports XViD/DiVX playback so I can fit up to 7 full movies on one standard DVD :-D )

So i can use DVDFab Decrypter (free and up to date) to rip to iso file and then use ImageBurn to burn to disc? Won't need DVD Shrink because i'm not interested in the extras and other languages. I just downloaded DVDFab but its a 30 day trial except for DVD Decrypter which ithink is free.

Yeah, I think most of the features in DVDFab are 30 day trial except for basic DVD decryption, which is fine. Once you have the full disc ripped to the hard drive, you can use DVDShrink (personally, I have never used it so I can't comment) or ShrinkTo5 which will create the needed file structure of just the main movie (I haven't used ShrinkTo5 in over a year but I think it will create ISO image files). From there, you can use just about any free burning program to burn the final DVD using either the ISO (if available) or using the "Burn DVD Movie" and pointing the burning program to the VIDEO_TS and AUDIO_TS files. Once again, for burning ISO and other images, use ImgBurn; if you need to burn DVD file structures (AUDIO_TS, VIDEO_TS) then use either BurnAware or AShampoo Burning Studio 2009 (be sure to read my comments above in post #10 or the 'PS' below). You can also rip a full DVD using WinX DVD Ripper or Free DVD Decrypter.
    :-D

(PS- all the programs I mentioned in this post are 100% freeware - AShampoo requires email registration and BurnAware will install the Ask toolbar unless you uncheck the boxes during install; I haven't used FreeDVD Decrypter in a few months and I don't remember if there's a toolbar install you can uncheck, I know it doesn't ask for registration; WinX DVD Ripper has neither registration or a toolbar)

Get the free DVD Fab from their own site: http://www.dvdfab.com/free.htm
It will rip the VIDEO_TS folder (which contains all the DVD data) to your hard drive while removing the copy protection data. It will not make an ISO file. Using the VIDEO_TS file, DVD Shrink can be used to remove all the extras and leave just the movie. Guide here: http://www.mrbass.org/dvdshrink/ Go here: http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/664041 to see how to use imageburn with DVD Shrink to burn the finished movie.

dvd shrink will work by itself to rip and reduce as well, only problem is it hasn't been updated in quite a while, and doesnt support newer encryption methods.
