    1. I have a new computer and in trying to get it set up I am having a problem copying anything to the root folder. Please see attachment for error code I get. I followed this information on how to correct the error code; “Click Windows button and R simultaneously to open Run dialogue.

    2. Type secpol.msc command and press Enter after that.

    3. If a confirmation window appears, click OK.

    4. Now you should see a Local Security Policy window. Go to the Local Policies (left pane) and click on Security Options.

    5. Scroll down and locate User Account Control: Run all administrators in Admin Approval Mode.

    6. Right-click on it, choose Properties and opt for Disable.

    7. Don’t forget to click Apply and then OK to save the changes.

    8. Finally, close Local Security Policy window and reboot your device.

Now try to copy the needed file in the required destination folder, which earlier delivered you an error code 0x80070522.

We hope that this has helped you fix Error 0x80070522: A required privilege is not held by the client.

NOTE: if you encounter other errors on Windows, we would highly recommend installing a PC optimization tool. This software is extremely helpful in fighting against registry errors, startup issues, cache, malware, and similar PC-related issues. Thus, we would highly recommend downloading and running Reimage or RegCure Pro software.”

It worked on the new computer as far as allowing me to copy files to the root directory. But when I try copying any file to the root directories of any of the other computers on my network I get the same error message. I ran the “secpol.msc” on those computers and it didn’t help. I am not sure if that error message applies to the other computers I am trying to copy to or not but I cannot copy to their root directories. Any ideas on how to correct this?

Also the “secpol.msc” only seem to be available on the Pro version of Win 10? How can it be run on the Home version. I tried running in in the command prompt and it is not recognized as an external or internal command.

I have to ask Why do you feel the need to copy an excel spreadsheet to the root directory? That is not the correct location for it.

Here are solutions but note it does say

There are proper places for excel spreadsheets but not where you want to put it.

That spreadsheet was just the first file I used as an example when I tried to send to a root directory of another computer on my network. I don't store any data files in the root directory. I had been working on this problem for quite some time and just wanted that error box to show up so I could post it so others could see what I am seeing. I can copy to any folder on the c: drive but not the C: drive itself. There will be times when I do want to copy a folder with all the pertinent information and installation files in it for a purchased piece of software to the root directory to the root directory of my other computers. I have always been able to do that in the past and still can with my other computers. It is just this new one I got yesterday that is creating that error box and I was hoping to have a solution to make it work as I wanted it to.

Just as an example of what I had to do. I could not even copy a file from that same computer to the root drive and I believe that should always be possible. I got the same error message. So I found that article, I posted above, on the NET about using “secpol.msc” and disabling User Account Control: Run all administrators in Admin Approval Mode. I did that and then was able to copy and paste to the root drive. But I still cannot copy to the root directory of any other of my computers and I think I should be able to.

Hope that clears things up a little.
