    Hi all,

I want to copy some pictures from a cd disk to a blank cd disk. When I right click on a picture and scroll down to send to I don't get the option to copy to cd drive (D:).
The only options I have are:

    Compressed (Zipped) folder
    Desktop
    File CD
    Mail Recipient
    PC Files
    3 1/2 Floppy (A:)

I dont want to copy pictures onto a blank with Nero as the person whom I'm sending the disk to won't have Nero installed.

I used to have the option to send pics to my RW drive, but for some reason its no longer there.

Can some one help me find it and replace the option....pleaseeeeeeeeeee

Like you, I'm a little new to the "burning, ripping, copying" scene myself, so bear with me.

If I'm not mistaken, your friend doesn't need Nero, only you do as it is the program used to burn/copy files onto either a CD or DVD. Your friend won't need the burning software (Nero in this case). Her CD drive only needs to be able to read what's on the disk you send her.

It sounds as if your computer no longer recognizes your CD/RW drive, formerly drive 'D' on your machine. Did you have to reformat or re-install Windows? What make & model is your CD writer?

Go to your desktop and on 'My Computer', right-click that icon and at the bottom of the menu that pops up, click on 'Properties'. Then, go to the 'Hardware' tab under 'System Properties' and click on it. You should then see 'Device Manager' at the top. Click on the 'Device Manager' button and you'll see all the devices that your computer sees. Not too far from the top of the list of the devices, you should see 'DVD/CD-ROM drives' or something to that effect.

Do you see your CD writer/burner drive? Now, you may in fact have two, separate CD drives: one is just a reader (CD-ROM) and one is an actual burner (CD R/W). In my machine, I have a combo CD/DVD writer and ROM.

Let's start with 'Device Manager' and go from there. :) Don't do anything yet in a "Hey! What does this little red button do?" fashion. Let's just get a lay of the land first. My guess is that it's as simple as tapping your computer on the shoulder to get it to recognize the burner again. Who knows?? The computer might be PO'ed that the CD burner ate the last Klondike bar and is just ignoring it.

Ok...did what you asked and both my drives are listed in Device Manger under DVD/CD-ROM Drives
    They are:
    Freecom_DVD+/-RW 4B and
    Hitachi DVD-ROM GD 2500

I didnt see any red button anywhere!!! lol

Ok, done that,,what do I do next?

    and thanks again

Well, it appears that both of your 'removable media' drives are installed and good to go from what you saw in 'Device Manager'. You will, however, need some software to do the deed. You mentioned previously that you didn't want Nero and the like, but I think you're in the land of little choice. You'll notice the place once you pass the signs for 'Do I have to?'. ;)

On this site, there are several links for many flavors of downloadable and free burning software, such as Nero. I'm none too familiar with Nero, but I would imagine it's similar to Roxio and the like wherein you open the program, search for the "copy files to CD" button and have at it.

I wish it were as simple as drag-n-drop right there in Windows, but it ain't. And I think this is why you're not getting the option to copy those files into drive 'D'. Why? Because that's not an option.

You and I are both figuring this out as we go along, admittedly. So, if there's a more experienced set of hands here, please feel free to jump in and add your $.02. For the moment, it sounds as if you merely need some half-decent burning software. Do that and you'll be off like a prom dress. :)

ooh I've never had the chance to wear a prom dress,,1st time for everything tho!!

I have Nero 7 installed on my pc, what i meant in my 1st post was, I didn't want to use Nero to burn the photos onto a disk as I wasn't sure if my friend would be able to view them as she wont have Nero installed on her PC (sorry for the confusion).
Thanks anyway for you brilliant advice. As long as my friend can still view the photos on the disk, without needing to download the Nero software...I'm ready to go.....;)

LOL! "Brilliant advice". That's something I don't hear that often, unless it's said with a harshly sarcastic tone. ;)

Anywho, you should be fine with Nero. He'll take good care of you. Hey, just look at how he "warmed up" Rome when winter's chill was beginning to bite. rolleyes

I think the one thing you need to look out for when ripping the CD for your friend is the file type to which you'll be saving these tunes. I'm also not all that experienced with the many different music file types. It's a matter of making sure that the files types created on your new, shiny CD can be read by her CD-ROM. Having Nero installed on her machine wouldn't really make much of a difference. What will make the difference is whether or not these music files are compatible with the player she has installed. Are they files that only iTunes would recognize? Again, that's way outside my scope of PC knowledge. You wanna know where to find the best pizza in the Carroll Gardens section of Brooklyn or the best bowl of jambalaya in Atlanta, then I'm your guy.

I can barely get my iPod Nano to work much less perform magic with the many functions of iTunes or MediaPlayer and the like.

In any event, I hope that I've been of some help! Oh, and don't sweat not ever having worn a prom dress. I went to the prom. It sucked. A good Super Bowl party is 10x better any day of the week. :cool
