Copying user info into a new account

    G'day.

    I'm having a bit of trouble following chaslang's instructions for copying user account info into a new account (as per instructions in one of teh MG support forums).

    My main problem is that, at point 14. in chaslang's instructions, I can't find the account that I'm trying to copy. There's one account there called GGG, but none called WWW, which is what is listed under Control Panel - User Accounts, and at Login, and is presumably the one I'm after. The full list of folders in Docs and Settings is:

    * 3rd Account (this is the third account I created following chaslang's instructions)
    * Administrator
    * Administrator.WINDOWS-9782ECE
    * All Users
    * Default User (this was a hidden folder)
    * GGG
    * 2nd Account (this is the second account I created following chaslang's instructions)
    * Windows User
    * LocalService (hidden folder)
    * NetworkService (hidden folder)

    I don't know how teh GGG one got there (I guess I put it there once - I went through a similar process to this about 18 months ago, trying to resolve the same problem - Reason for doing it is that every time I login, I get a msg saying that one of the files containing registry data had a problem and had to be replaced from a backup copy... the procedure was successful (can't remember the exact wording). I wanted to replace my account as I thought that might fix this problem. So maybe I put GGG there then. Maybe I also deleted teh WWW one at that stage too??? Is that possible? Too long ago to remember).

    Anyway, I can't find teh account folder called WWW, and I'm wondering how to proceed.

    Second problem I created while trying to sort this out. I decided to try following chaslang's instructions assuming the GGG folder was teh one I wanted. But instead of COPYING teh folders across to the 2nd account, I MOVED them across, thus removing them from teh GGG account (I was getting a bit tired by that stage ).

    To make matters worse, when I found that this didn't seem to work (teh desktop in teh 2nd account wasn't like the one in teh original account, so I assumed it hadn't worked), I deleted teh 2nd and 3rd accounts. This of course left me with no copy of what was originally in GGG, except that the 3 Ntuser files are still there (these weren't moved).

    I don't know if this matters. My original account still looks the same (as far as I know), although now when I create a 2nd and 3rd account, the desktop background goes to the Windows default (grassy hill and blue sky), which is not what it was before. I guess that gives some idea of what was in the GGG account.

    So to summarise my questions:

    1. Which folder should I copy across to the 2nd account at step 14 in your instructions? Is it even there? :confused

    2. Does it matter that I deleted folders from teh GGG account, and what should I do if it does matter? :confused :confused

    Thanks very much for whatever advice you're able to offer.

    I still have this issue and I have not been able to find any ideas on how to resolve it. Can anyone help? Pretty please? :crybaby

    The problem is, this site is huge and we don't know what set of instructions you are following. If you won't help, you have to point the way so we can see what you are trying to do.

    Hmmm... this issue is still unresolved. Perhaps I should try to break it up a bit...

    I am having trouble following chaslang's instructions for copying user info into a new account. See instructions at:

    http://forums.majorgeeks.com/showthr...s\Old+Username

    At point 14 in the instructions, I can't find the account that chaslang calls "Old Username", which in my case would be "WWW". All I have is:

    *3rd Account (this is the third account I created following chaslang's instructions)
    * Administrator
    * Administrator.WINDOWS-9782ECE
    * All Users
    * Default User (this was a hidden folder)
    * GGG
    * 2nd Account (this is the second account I created following chaslang's instructions)
    * Windows User
    * LocalService (hidden folder)
    * NetworkService (hidden folder)

    Any help on this would be greatly appreciated. :)

    I think you have to sort this out on your own. We can't begin to guess what you did and it seems you aren't too sure.

    Ok. Thanks plodr.

    Would you or someone at least be able to tell me whether the
    Docs and Settings folder
    should always contain a folder with a name that matches the one in
    Control Panel>User Accounts?

    If I change the name in User Accounts, will that also change the name of the folder in Docs and Settings? (I could try it myself, but I think my folder is so messed up, I wouldn't know what I was looking for. )

    That will get me started. :)

    Documents and settings matches the users in your system BUT changing a user name is not a good idea. You will end up getting locked out of that account. The documents for that user will not be accessible.
    At this point, it might be a good idea to get the files out from an account that you can get into and store them elsewhere. Then using the Control Panel/Admin Tools/Computer Management then in the left column Users and Groups. Open that and click on Users. You can see all the users including those put there that may not appear at login (like adminstrator and guest). You can delete an account from there. Again I caution you, before you delete an account be very sure that you have stored elsewhere any files for that user because once the account is removed, you can't gain access to them even if you use the same name.

    Thanks plodr.
    OK, my problem starts at your first line (
    ).
    My Docs and Settings doesn't match my Users.
    Docs and settings looks like this (now):

    * Administrator
    * Administrator.WINDOWS-9782ECE
    * All Users
    * Default User (this was a hidden folder)
    * Geoff
    * LocalService (hidden folder)
    * NetworkService (hidden folder)
    * Windows User

    Users (under Users and Groups - following your path) looks like this (I had to put dotted lines in - the spaces I put in disappeared when I posted):

    NAME............................FULL NAME
    Administrator
    ASPNET..........................ASP.NET Machine Account
    Guest
    xHelp Assistant..............Remote Desktop Help Assistant Account
    xSUPPORT_388945a0...CN=Microsoft Corporation, Redmond...
    Windows User...............WWW

    Control Panel> User Accounts looks like this (there are two accounts listed with a note under each - again with the dotted lines instead of spaces):

    WWW ............................................Guest Account
    Computer Administrator................Guest Account is off

    It seems that my account is named WWW, but this doesn't appear under Docs and Settings. It seems to be (and I think it is) the only user account. The only other possibility is Geoff, under Docs and Settings, but this does not appear under Users, as you can see. :confused

    PS The Geoff folder only contains 3 Ntuser files. I inadvertently deleted all the folders that it had in it.

    OK. Looking at that now, it looks like "Windows User" = "WWW", and this could be the account I'm looking for under chaslang's instructions.

    If so, is it normal for the Docs and Settings folder to NOT have the FULL ACCOUNT NAME, but just the title "Windows User"? If yes, then perhaps chaslang's instructions could be altered to reflect this (dare I say it?)
