I've found a way to make a standard XP install disk allow you to install with SP2 instead of the regular install, saving time and energy.
However, step one of the process is to copy the XP CD to a dir on your system. When I try to do this I get "invalid perameter". It does copy one or two of the dirs, but when it gets to \support\tools\ I get the error. Is there a way to make this copy? The instructions I have jut state that "matter of factly" like it should be easy. I've tried on several systems thinking maybe it was something to do with the burner I was trying to use with no success.

Could someone point me in the right direction please.

    Thanx in advance

Yes that's where I got the info. However, one step is to copy the XP CD to your hard drive. And that is what my question was in the first place. I can't copy the cd. I get an error trying to copy the "support\tools\" directory.

Try this program. It is very good, very quick, and works extremely well. I slipstreamed XP SP1, then SP2, in less than 10 minutes.

    Well, that didn't work,,

    Try the one below. :D

I've had this for a while now but never tried it>

"You'll have to use xcopy... there are important subdirectories, unlike the win9x setup files.
Let's just assume that your cdrom drive is E: while booted with a win98 startup disk. Smartdrv is loaded automatically when you choose CDROM support... so trying to load it again will only display statistics, so don't bother for this stage. Ok...
C: (change to the C:\> drive... can be another partition where you store the setup files, substitute correct drive letter if so)
    md i386 (create a directory)
A: (change back to A:\> prompt)
    xcopy e:\i386 c:\i386 /e
That will copy the contents of the i386 directory and it's subdirectories, to the i386 directory on the C: drive (or wherever we put it). The /e switch is the only one required for this (copy directories, including empty ones) Go for a coffee, for it will take a while.
When it's finished, reboot again with the Windows 98 startup disk. This time, choose 'Without CDROM support' for we no longer need that driver overhead.
Now, we need to load smartdrv or the file copying phase will be slower than a constipated tortoise. From the A:\> prompt...
    smartdrv
    C:
    cd \i386
    winnt
The installation should now be under way."

same/similar issue as my Dallas friend, but I seem to get all the XP Pro files onto the HD ok, but using nero v5.5.whateverlatest version, to then try to move these on to a bootable [FAT32] CD burn, I get a Nero file copy error every time. I'm stumped. This SHOULD work [according to several geek sites]

    p.s. the vitals are:
    - System being used to do the copying is Gigabyte Socket A AMD 1ghz, 512mb running Windows ME latest/everything/loaded to gills
    - using LiteOn 52x burner
    - using fast media
    - using Windows ME fat32 boot diskette as the boot code source
    - and pulling the XP pro files from a copy that is on my HD [appears they're all there]
    - and i tried leaving out the Autorun file as I had heard this one would never copy or work right
