Sure, they can go bad. In fact, RJ11 and RJ45 cables go bad more often than most people suspect. Note they don't go bad just sitting undisturbed in a drawer or behind your desk. But these critical devices are not very robust. That is, they cannot tolerate being chewed on, or yanked, tripped over or pulled too hard without sustaining damage to the wires or to one of the crimp connections. Fortunately, these cables are very inexpensive. So if having connection problems with your Ethernet connection or wired phone, it is easy and inexpensive to swap out cables.

Don't know you mean. Millions of people use DSL. That is just a broadband service to the home and the main competition to cable broadband. Once inside the home, many connect via Ethernet, many via wireless, many have both wired and wired devices.

No, it is not all Comcast. Comcast is just one of many Internet service provider (ISPs). I use Cox, for example. Clearwire is now part of Sprint.

I just had to replace 2 ethernet cables because the RJ45 connectors wouldn't remain seated and I'd lose connection. As Digerati said, they're inexpensive. I used to have DSL through Verizon and lived right on the fringe area of tower coverage. Connections would frequently putz out. I switched to TWC but, wish the president of Adelphia hadn't screwed up. THEY had the best internet service (1500 Mb+ download). Now I only get 20 Mb for the same price.

my green rj 11 seems ok and a tight fit -still wont work--regular phone cord works yet is damn slow

computer stores in town dont know what rj11 is or they say that to make money off "cleaning out computers" etc

Amazon, Ebuyer, Ebay, Newegg and Walmart all sell them online and dirt cheap.

DSL is slow by comparison anyway — 768 Kb. But, yeah, the RJ11 is for computers with fax modems. Neither of my currently usable laptops have one or an RJ11 jack.

That's a slight confusion of terms. DSL is simply the generic name for technologies that are used to transmit digital data over phones lines. There are several types of DSL that can transmit data that can achieve anything between 2 and 24 mbps, so they are not 'slow' but only slower in comparison to cable and hybrid fibre, and fibre-optic. And the fact is that in most places, the vast majority of broadband users still use DSL.
But as far as the wired connectors is concerned, both of those quoted types are very easy to buy online for anyone, in almost any length you need.
The simple thing to do - without trudging round shops - is go online, do an internet search 'RJ11 (insert length required) metres, USA prices', and then just choose the cheapest one with the lowest or zero delivery charge, and do the same for the RJ45. So simple so quick.

What, no mention of VDSL/VDSL2, with ~55/100 Mbps down, ~16/100 up?

Umm, regular "landline" phone service comes through a hole in the wall too. If your Comcast "cable" connection is a wire that comes through a hole, that is just because the installer did not put a wall jack in the wall.

Not sure what you are suggesting with satellite links. It really depends on where you live but understand if you get TV through your cable or DSL provider they use satellites too. If you are under the impression the big cable channels and broadcast channels (NBC, ABC, CBS, BBC, etc) send all their content across the country via cable only, that is incorrect. They all "uplink" to satellites, then the TV/cable channel is downloaded to a GEP (ground entry point) or satellite terminal in your region belonging to (or leased by) your service provider. Then they distribute that content out to their customers via cable or phone lines.
That's not surprising. Regular phone modems use ancient technologies and while there are still a couple million users still using "dial-up", that is but a tiny drop in the bucket compared to broadband customers.

Do also understand you do NOT plug computers into the DSL connecting coming out of your wall. Whether using Cable or DSL, a Cable or DSL modem plugs into the wall, then you plug your computer into the Ethernet port (via RJ45, Ethernet cable) to that Cable or DSL modem. Alternatively, you might have a router in between. Or you might connect via wireless to the WAP - wireless access point - integrated into that modem or into a wireless router. In any case, you do not connect a computer directly to the DSL connection coming out of the wall. There must be a modem in between.
