I have a Averatec 3200 series notebook with a Slimtype DVDRW SOSW-852S which decided a while ago to go bad on me. I have read many posts about how this cdrom is prone to disaster and that it happens to a lot of people. My disc drive won't read any cd's at all. DVD's aren't a problem it is just the cd, any cd even the recovery one that came with it. I tried to flash it yesterday and it started to convert it to some PSX3 thing I'm not sure. When it rebooted a window message opened saying that it needed Disc 2 from the Windows XP disc which I dont have because XP was preloaded on my computer. I uninstalled the cdrom thinking that it would install itself when it started up again but it keeps saying that I need this disc. So now aside from the fact that it used to only read dvd's now it doesn't even work at all. Could someone please help me with this?

you say you tried to flash the firmware? where did you get the firmware info from? can you just cancel the notice and continue to boot into windows? please post the exact message that you get.

The firmware was just something I found some random website that said it could help with the cdrom since this type of cdrom always crashes. I'm not even sure what it did what I do know is that it made things worse. Okay here is what the window that pops up says.

The file 'cdrom.sys' on Windows XP Home Edition Service Pack 2 CD is needed.

Type the path where the file is located, and then click OK.

    Copy files from: c:\windows\ServicePackFiles\i386
This file location is highlighted and when I click on it it shows Drive D with nothing else after it.

i found that file in C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers
point that prompt to that location to see if it's there

btw.....you should be very careful when "tinkering" with firmware, and make sure you have the correct one first. check averatec's support site to see if there is some more info for you
