Nicky, run chkdsk /f and say yes to all repairs.

Given your other post about viruses the question needs to be asked about how much damage they might have done to your system? Did your virus scanner catch them right away, or did you install the scanner after you started having problems? If the latter you might continue to have a bunch of problems due to damaged files and chkdsk isn't going to fix that. Sometimes you just have to bite the bullet and reformat and reinstall the OS.

IMO it's pretty irresponsible to advise something that drastic without trying other options first. Avast is quite cabable of cleaning viruses and XP is quite capable of repairing file system damage and damaged system files without reformatting.

Nicky, schedule a boot-time scan in Avast and run the chkdsk /f and we'll take it from there.

Just how do you figure it is iresponsible to suggest he MIGHT have to bite the bullet and reformat? Chkdsk can only do so much FOR SYSTEM FILES and doesn't do a thing for program files. Sometimes it doesn't matter how much repairing or reinstalling you do nothing is going to fix it short of a reformat and reinstall.

    Touchy aren't we?

It is irresponsible in that a good tech tries the minimum amount of changes to the system first and then escalates up to the more drastic measures as necessary. Reformatting will fix just about every software issue, but it's not good troubleshooting methodology to shotgun a problem like that. Not to mention you want to save the user as much hassle as possible.

Maybe you have some things to learn before you can tell me to go f myself.

And Nicky is a she, not a he.

the answer to "did your scanner catch the right away?" is, i dont think so, i run chkdsk at the boot up nearly all the time, but pc got sluggish, things froze, shut down, everything you could think of was happening, so i though, "lets run avast scan" (i thought it run all the time seeing as its permanently on my task bar) thats when it found the prob, any way i put them bugs in my chest, then deleted. Everything seems to be workin fine now (or for the time being)
    thanx

    Pink?

    Whats this about pink, Alan?

I agree with the chkdsk /f by the way.

Near as I can tell, thats a cluster error, and should be fixed by it.

As for reformatting...I won't go there. The board knows where I stand on the subject ;)

However, I am smart enough to figure out what the above said after a few minutes.

Probably why I will never listen to another thing you say from here on out.

    Tsk, tsk.

nickson2, are you using fat32 or ntfs?

If you are using fat32, converting to ntfs would help prevent the above problems.

  19. nickson2

    nickson2 Master Sergeant

yep fat32, and i hate it! i also have 98 and xp on as you can see from my sig and i hate that too! much prefer xp and ntfs, like on my other pc.... But im a woman, unsure of how to start changing it, so i just been putting up with it all :(

Well, I could show ya, but I wont lie, there is always a risk that things will go bad. Thats the nature of any disk operation. Its advisable to backup your data.

    Still interested?

Do the chkdsk /f, if you havent already. Schedule it on next reboot, and perform it then.

Then, at the command prompt, type:

    convert c: /FS:NTFS

You may be asked for the volume name. This is the label you gave your harddrive, if you have done so.

It will say it cant unmount the drive and ask to do it next reboot.

    Hit Y, for yes.

When you reboot, the process begins. Whatever you do, don't interrupt it.

  21. nickson2

    nickson2 Master Sergeant

but as you can see that sig keeps dissappearing.

  22. Adrynalyne

    Adrynalyne Guest

    Ah I see. Dual boot?

May want to leave it fat32 then.

Otherwise, 98 cannot write to your xp partition.

  23. Adrynalyne

    Adrynalyne Guest

Also the convert command above may not be C:.

It will be the drive letter you have XP on.

what chance have i? i dont even know how to schedule chkdsk /f on reboot. nor can i find that avast scan on boot up thing either.

    nickson2 Master Sergeant

    i dont like 98 anyway

  26. Adrynalyne

    ok.

    In this order:

    Start, run.

    In the run box, type:

    cmd.exe

    Click OK.

    at the cmd prompt, type:

    chkdsk /f

    Hit enter.

It will say it cant unmount the volume and offer to schedule it next boot.

Hit 'Y' for yes, minus the quotes.

Reboot the computer, sit back, and relax.

Or watch a movie. Its not a fast process.

For Avast, select 'Schedule boot-time scan' from the menu, and it will ask to reboot. You can select now or later.

Choose 'Start Avast antivirus' and then you can access the main menu from there after it launches.

Or you can start it from your Start Menu > All Programs.

    nickson2 Master Sergeant

Ive had to unplug the pc and put in the second pc, cos it wouldnt let me get online and it keeps rebooting without warning.
would a repair fix probs im havin with programs too

  39. alanc

    alanc MajorGeek

Maybe not, but it might fix file system problems that could be causing the problems with programs. But you still might have to reinstall the programs.

Given what you said earlier about switching from FAT32 to NTFS, a reformat and clean install is an option for you. As long as you have all your program install CDs and there's not anything on there that you can't afford to lose.

    It's your call.

  40. nickson2

    nickson2 Master Sergeant

well ive managed to back up my docs etc to cd and most proggies i have cds for, the ones i aint, i will av to do without. if i do a reformat, shall i give avast another try? or is AVG better

  41. alanc

    alanc MajorGeek

    I think Avast is better.

Let's try one more thing first:

Boot from your XP CD, when the welcome screen appears, press 'R' to go to the Recovery Console. You'll have to enter the number for the XP installation and the Administrator password, then you'll get to a command prompt.

Once there run chkdsk /r and let it find/fix any disk errors. When it finishes type 'exit' to reboot and see if things are any better.

Administrator password? i dont know it!

  43. alanc

    alanc MajorGeek

The account you normally log in with is admin level, no?

Try booting into Safe Mode and change the password on the Administrator account.

  44. Adrynalyne

Or just hit 'enter' in the event that its blank.
