I ran system file checker and I found a bunch of corrupt files. How do I correct these? I have windows 98.

First I would save a copy of the system file check log that listed the corrupted files in a new location by selecting File>Save As> insert a name and new location. Then I would edit the file to only show the corrupted file lines, save it and print it out.

This should fix your Windows problems

SFC settings I use is to append to the existing log. Every time I run it I use the File>Save As> insert a name and new location for the file. Since I do it after I update or install or uninstall programs I usually name them by date and program it pretains to so they can be searched through using find and containing text if I need to know when and around what time a file was originally installed. Then I reopen the log in the SFC settings, select all the text, press delete (emptied for the next time) and save it.
Check the setting to check for all changed or deleted files too and run it again. Use this log to compare to your printed one and x out the printed one for all the files you fixed. Save it as stated above and clear the log.

I generally back up any file before I replace it in case something goes wrong.
Now your printed log file should only contain files that belong to other programs you installed. Some show you the programs names in this log & others you will have to try to find by when you open the program and it doesn't work stating what file is the problem. I would start with any that appear in program folders by first closing the program if it is open (so files won't be in use), back up & fix them and search the CD for the rest of the files showing in your boot drive folders or Windows folders by using File>Find>Files and Folders, enter all the corrupted files in the containing text location (some files are in compressed and this will find them) 5-10 at a time (with a space between each name) and search for them on the CD. If they are found back up the bad one & replace it from the CD in the folder it goes in leaving the Find window open. If it won't let you replace the file because it is in use write down what CD the file is on in your print out and try it later in the next step, if you fixed it x it out on the print. In the find use File>Save Search for a copy of the search to be put on the desktop to use on the next CD. Repeat this until all the program groups are fixed.

Now for all the ones you know on which CD they are on, but it wouldn't let you replace the file:
Restart windows in the safe mode and try that way for all the ones it will work on x'ing out your print when it's fixed. If it still doesn't do it try to change it's settings not to automatically start up with windows and fix it. Past that you have to do some DOS work or uninstall/reinstall the program.

For those remaining on your list you will need to wait until you open a program that doesn't work right or do a search to see if any site will bring up it's file name and show what program it belongs to. I wouldn't download any to use though.
After this is done use windows update and all your program updates to make sure the files your using are the best most recent patched ones.

E for effort & I usually try to do everything the easy way though it doesn't always work out that way. Maybe someone else can give you easier steps.

Yes it is probably the hard way, but hopefully most of the corrupted files are only window ones which will make it easy since when you follow the link and do that step it is suppose to fix them. Just be sure to appy any windows updates needed after you get back on the internet since windows is so holely .
I'll be back on tomorrow night if storms permit if you run into any questions or problems. If not as soon as I get back on I'll check the thread.

I decided if it's not broke don't fix it. Everything seems to be running fine so i'll just keep at that for now. Thank you Alex

Your welcome & right. I should have searched before I opened my mouth.
More info from here states that the corrupted files may be udateded ones though I have never had but only 1 found as corrupted and made several updates:
    http://users.westelcom.com/rogersr/sfc.htm
    then gen use:
    http://www.windows-help.net/windows98/start-142.shtml
I have read some virus's, etc. can append themselves to window files, but whether this would show them as corrupted I don't know since I didn't thoughly read the links from these pages.
