Corrupt OS? Help me decide

In the process of trying to update my video driver, after all the steps taken with everyone i could think of, I went to Dell for assistance. $40 dollars later, they tell me that my OS is corrupt, and the only way to update my driver is to wipe my computer and start from factory setting!! Is this a load of crap? what do you guys suggest?

 

I suggest that you never expect Dell to have a better answer than format.

So..what are you seeing, and what are your symptoms?

This all started with my first post "Mobility Radeon X1400 Driver Update". I had purchaced the orange box from Valve. In the past, i have been able to play Half life 2, and all its affiliated games without trouble. Then came along Team Fortress 2. I played the beta for all of 2 minutes when all of the sudden, it crashed with an error message saying "could not be read at (numbers), memory (something else). I looked into it on Steam, they said to run the steam crash test to evaluate my problem. Turns out my video driver was extremely outdated. So then, i started into the process of trying to update my driver, following instructions from ATI, Dell, Valve, and Major Geeks, with no luck in succeding. I then turn to Dell Service reps to help me, but after attempting what i had been doing via a dell connect connection, the rep determined that my OS was corrupt (which i think is a load of crap), and wanted to wipe my computer. I can no longer play any of my Source engine based games, which is weird. My specs are Mobility Radeon X1400, XP service pack 2, 1gb ram, Centrino Duo Core 1.56ghz (I think). I will be more than happy to give more details, but i have to go to class right now, so i will give more later.

Right on, well, i can now play my other source games, thanks to the Omega Drivers. Thank god, Well, I will keep tweaking to see if i will be able to play TF2, or maybe i should just wait until they fix all the bugs to play

 

Glad it worked out. I use Omegas for all my laptop video needs.
