Corrupt Profile

Had a corrupted profile on winxp pro, so made a new user id (different name) and followed microsofts instructions to transfer emails and addresses to new profile. Made sure it showed local rather than "temp" user. After transferring everything deleted old profile. When the system rebooted all information was not saved and the profile shows as if it were a newly created one. How can I make sure all my information ...emails, favourites etc are saved when the system reboots and all information doesn't disappear.
Please help..
