Hi, I had some nagging problems in my computer(Windows XP pro).So when I tried to restore to an earlier time, I was in for a rude shock.I had 5 restore points and each and every one failed to restore to an earlier point. By sheer luck I could get over the problems by trial & error. I don't want to take chances anymore and would like some remedial measures for 'system restore'.

    Hi

While system restore if it works properly is a good backup option it does not really take over from a good backup solution and one thats good is Imaging (ghosting) your whole HDD, this has the benefit of backing up everything so that in the event of a bad issue you can recover the whole PC to the date of the last backup.

Acronis True Image is my prefered solution but I did try out this free one called Macrium Reflect a while back and its just like Acronis

To purge system restore you need to turn it off and on again and then create a manual new restore point, but system restore is not foolpoof and malware can corrupt it.

In addition to making images, as halo pointed out, I also back up all my drivers on every computer and burn them to a CD.
If I'm forced to do a clean reinstall, a last resort for me, at least I know I don't have to comb the internet and hope I get the correct drivers for everything.

Since windows 2000 doesn't have a system restore feature, I run ERUNT.

This program makes a copy of the registry the first time I do a cold boot and stores copies of the latest 30 registries in C:.

Hi Techsent, Thanks for your suggestion. Windows ASR utility seems to be an interesting option, but needs an XP cd. As it will format the drive where Windows is installed, will it trigger 'Windows Re-validation notification' when the system is restored?
