could not load installer for volume

I have a problem and I'm sure its bigger than it first appears. When I boot my laptop I get a "device installer error" box. In it is written "Windows could not load the installer for volume contact your hardware vendor for assistance." I have had this laptop for over 3yrs so have no hardware vender support.
I have assumed this is a system file error of some sort and have tried typing SFC in the run box from the start menu. I get a black text box flash up quicker than I can read and its gone.

Also when I try to shut down I get a message box TSrsTrayWnd is not responding. I have looked in task manager and it isn't running nor is it in Add/remove software.

Are these symptoms related and indicating a more serious problem. Please help!
Thanks in advance for any advice.

    Cheers, Spen!

Thanks for replying to my thread.

I typed sfc/scannow into the command promp and this is what happened.....
"Windows File Protection could not initiate a scan of protected system files"
"The specific error code is 0x000006ba [the RPC server is unavailable.].

Yes I am using a toshiba laptop. Model name: EQUIUM A110-233.
    Any ideas???

There should be a space between sfc and /

Here is an article and an edit of the registry for the RPC Server error that you are seeing.
    http://askbobrankin.com/rpc_server_unavailable.html
It is an old article but Bob Rankin knows what he is talking about. I have a book written by him in the 1990's.

    Hey Plodr!

Tried the scannow command with the space with the same result. I had a look at the link in your last post. It sounds like my problem but a bit complicated to fix with my PC knowledge and competancy.
I did have some malware probs which I solved with the help of the Majorgeeks malware forum. In the advice was to run ccleaner which I did. Every thing I've heard about ccleaner says its very safe, could this have removed the RPC registry key???
In the article it mentioned searching a fully working PC for the registry key and pasting it to mine. I don't have acces to another and I wouldn't feel comfortable potentialy breaking someone elses machine!
    Is there another way??

    Cheers.

I'd be very surprised if CCleaner removed the RPC registry key. I've been running it for years on several computers and have never had a problem on any of them.

So you don't have a single friend that would be willing to look in the registry, export one key to a flash drive and give it to you?

Put this address in your browser window
    Code:
    http://file.walagata.com/w/perk/fix_RpcSs.reg
You will get a download popup.
Select to save the file. Please scan it with your security programs after you have downloaded it. Trust no files that you download from strangers (and I am a stranger to you). When you have determined the file is malware-free, all you need to do is click on it; you will get a popup asking if you want to add or maybe merge this into your registry. Say yes and you now have the missing key.

    Plodr

I have downloaded and scanned the registry key. It was succesfully entered into the registry but when I restarted I got the same 'could not load installer for volume' error message.

Although these messages are annoying they don't seem to affect my machine, is it something I can just live with or has this fault got consequences I'm ignorant of?

    Cheers

Sorry, I gave you the solutions I discovered. If there are more, I did not find them.
I have no idea if it can be safely ignored or there will be a consequence later.

    Thanks for all your help.
I think I'll just stick my head in the sand. All the important stuff is backed up so if does develop into something nasty I'll just scrub and restore.

    Chers dude!

I am having the exact same problem on a Gateway desktop. Even to the point of not being able to run sfc /scannow. I get the same RPC error. I get the "Windows could not load the installer for volume. Contact your hardware vendor for assistance." I get the same message for keyboard, and for mouse, and sometimes for hdc (which I think is "hard disc controller". If I go into Device Manager and click on properties for any of these, I get the same. I get the message that the SysSetup.dll is missing, and it is, but copying in a new one does not help.
Did you ever get your issue resolved? I have posted on another thread, with all the specs of my computer and logs, so I am hoping one of the experts here can help. However, it would be great if you would let me know if you ever resolved the issue.
By the way, I tried the link for the RPC registry fix, and could not download it. I think plodr pulled it offline.
    Thanks, David!

    Hey

I haven't managed to solve this issue but it doesn't seem to course any problems! I get cannot load installer for volume every time my laptop boots up but it seems to have no real effect! I'm using a toshiba laptop that is nearly 4yrs old so I'm just looking for an excuse to replace it.

Although if you find a solution hit me up as it is very annoying! Sorry I couldn't do more help you out!

OK. Thanks. I'll let you know if anyone helps out. It doesn't affect mine either, but is very annoying and getting worse.

    Hi

Is the Windows version used in both these PCs, XP?

If so try this, in these two locations (C:\WINDOWS\system32\ and C:\I386) should be a file named sfcfiles.old, if there is then back it up somewhere as a copy then with the originals in those locations rename them to sfcfiles.dll and reboot.

or if the sfcfiles.dll is in the i386 folder already copy it to C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32 and reboot.

    Halo,

Thanks! I followed your directions and was able to run sfc /scannow for the first time. It responded that some of the files were replaced by invalid files and then asked for the Windows SP Professional Service Pack 3 disk. No can do. All I got with the Gateway machine was a recovery disc, and SP3 was downloaded from the internet. I tried some of the Microsoft discs I have from other systems, they are all XP Home editions and not the XP Pro Media Center edition. This does tell me, however, that the problem is in some of the base XP files, and not in the bios or chipset drivers.

    Hi
Yes I'm running XP. I tried to follow your directions but I was unable to find either file in either location. I think this may be the problem, any ideas where I go from here?

    cheers
