whats goin on? I was wondering if anyone knows a formula in excel, or can write a macro to count the number of colored cells in a set area. I am trying to analyze some data in calendar form in excel, where colored cells are days absent. If you understand where I'm trying to get at here I would appreciate any suggestions you might have.

You wouldn't base it on the color of the cell. The color is applied by looking at the data itself. You'd want to do the same to count the colored cells. Use the same validation rule it's using to color the cells but change it to sum it up instead of color a cell.
