I am looking and motherboards are pretty cheap so I think I will upgrade my motherboard. I was searching ebay. First off, here is what I will be putting on my new motherboard as of now:

    1 512MB Pc2100 DDR ram
    1 256MB pc2100 DDR ram
    1 512 400Mhz ddr ram
    1 200GB Ata 100 Hard drive
    1 60GB ata 133 Hard drive
    Geforce 4 ti4200 video card
pentium 4 2.2ghz processor-is pentium 4 or celeron better btw?
Mad dawg entertainer 7.1 Sound card
of course the 56k mdm, lan etc. What do you guys think? What is a good motherboard today. Thanks in advance.

PS: For comparison I have a via Pe-11L motherboard as of now.

    Pentium 4 is better.

the PC2100 memory will greatly slow down the PC. I would stick with the one stick of DDR400 (PC3200). Then you could sell your PC2100 memory and put the money towards another stick of PC3200.

When looking for a motherboard, one of the most important things to consider is the chipset. Right now an Intel chipset is the best for an Pentium chip. Also look for the features you want in the board. i.e. SATA, Lan, Dual Channel Memory, Integraded sound, and video. ect.

How do I know what to look for? What FSB will work with my current processor? I think the processor is fine. I will keep this processor. I agree on the ram idea. Also as far as my Hard drives are concerned: will 1 be able to run at ata133 and the other at ata100? What is wrong with let's say this motherboard? : http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=80159&item=6715758280&rd=1 What else should I be concerned about? There are computers at best buy so fast that you click on a game and it's loaded. that's what I'm looking for.

Im not to sure about running the hard drives at differnt speeds, but i do know that there is very little difference between ATA100, and ATA133. So ever running them at ATA100, you wouldnt see a slow down.

I personally would not buy a motherboard from ebay. To risky for me. I would go to www.newegg.com They have a hudge selection, and are a very trusted seller. I have spent over $1000 dollars there so far. :)

also, if I have 2 ddr pc2100 running at (333mhz I think) will that cause my 400mhz stick to run slower? they can't run independant of each other?

The motherboad looks ok. Im not 100% sure what your porcessor FSB bus is so i can not make a deffinit decision on which board will fit your need best.

SATA is the newest form of transfer for hard drives. Its faster around 150MB/sec

PC2100 memory runs at 266mhz. What ever memory you have installed they will all run at the slowest speed. Even haveing all the sticks in, as much memory as it is, will not help. Like i said you will be better off with the 400mhz DDR.

ok, sorry for the million ?'s. I haven't built a computer in 3 years, so am not up to date onlatest and greatest technology. So I assume my ata hard drives won't work at the 150MB/sec I have to get SATA drives to take advantage of that right? Also, how can I find out what my processor FSB is for sure?

Your current dirves will not run SATA. Most motherboards have ATA, and SATA channels. This would allow you to have your current ATA drives, and provide you with upgrade options for the future.

Download this program. It will give you all your processor information. :)

Is there a program I could get the useful specs off my motherboard and let you guys know so you can tell me if it is worth upgrading or not?
