I seem to have a couple of issues arisen over the last few weeks. I have a asus laptop running xp home. Norton internet security 2005 is my antivirus package. I connect using a linksys modem/router (WAG54GS) which also connects 2 other PCs at home. I have adaware and spybot and run weekly scans.

    Issue 1
I get a "open power policy file error" message when starting the laptop. If I click OK, the message goes and everything seems to be OK. Why would I have just recently started getting this error and do I need to do anything about it?

    Issue 2
My IR mouse periodically stops working for no reason. It still flashes red. if I disconnet it from the USB hub and reconnect it, it starts working again but will eventually freeze again. Is this as simple as getting a new mouse or is something else making this happen?

    Issue 3
The laptop periodically freezes up. Programs wont open or close or are at least painfully slow. This often prevents the Linksys gateway from connecting. Is there a compatibility thing going on between Norton and Linksys? Freezing started around the same time as the gateway was installed, I think.

    Any help/advice is greatly appreciated

The first error is to do with the asus power management software try downloading the latest version from the asus site, the mouse could be a number of things most likely the power saving properties of the mouse again try downloading the latest drivers from the manufacturers site,if theres a configuration utility download and install that also, make sure all your xp service packs are up to date for the latest usb drivers and also check the asus site for driver updates

Not sure about Norton never used it,there could be problems with norton firewall blocking the router so check your firewall settings, try disabling the firewall and see if the prob pops up again,of course dont use the internet with the firewall disabled :)

    Thanks Rikky

Download from Asus solved the power issue. Looks like the wireless adaptor is using all of the power from the USB hub (although it is connected directly to a USB port). Mouse works OK if I connect it to the USB port directly, not using the hub (hub is not self powered) I can work around this. Haven't had a freeze since doing this so fingers crossed.

    Appreciate your help
