Putting together my first custom computer (life got too busy and didn't have time to do it a while back).

    I have a few questions:
    1. Should I get a 939 or am2 mobo? I'd like to get AM2 because it's newer. If AM2 is the way to go, which should I get? I won't be using SLI, so I want something cheap but sturdy and reliable. I'm trying to save some money wherever I can... so I'm looking at $70-100.

    2. If I got a AM2 socket mobo, and wanted to utilize that for the processor, would this be a good choice?: AMD Athlon 64 3800+ Orleans 2000MHz HT 512KB L2 Cache Socket AM2 Processor - Retail
    Otherwise, if I get a 939 socket mobo, I'll just get a 3700.

    3. I want to get 1 GB of RAM and everyone tells me that corsair xms is the way to go. Although, the cheapest I could find is $100. Is it better to get 1x1gb or 2x512mb? Would something like G.SKILL, which is cheaper, be okay or considerably worse?

    4. How much w should my PSU be? I was thinking an Antec truepower 500w. (I'm getting a 7600GT vid card btw)

    5. Can someone find me a cheap, good, reliable CD rom drive that runs CDs and DVDs? I'm not sure what the speed, RW, all that stuff means.

    Thanks very much.

if you go socket 939, you can probably get a 3800 x2 for about the same as the 3800 am2. however am2 is newer and you will be able to upgrade better for the future. there isn't as big of a selection of am2 mobo's yet.

i would go 2x512 for dual channel..don't skimp out on brand/type. if you don't want the best, then go middle of the road or better...am2 does ddr2 also

i would go minimum 500w on the psu

and anything plextor is good for dvd r/rw...but they can be a little pricey
you would want a dvd+-rw dual layer.
