Im ready to kill myself because of this thing...

Any time I attempt to run any media, the CPU maxes out and makes everything 'stutter' and it gets really annoying. It also happens if I open 3 or more small things in Photoshop or Illustrator and I really need to get the issue fixed.

I have included the HiJack This log in hopes someone can shed some light on it before I head to the gun shop....

    Thanks!

Download and run WinPatrol and see what all is on your Startup list.

Remove any but your Firewall and security. The rest will still work when you need them.
Also, check the scheduled tasks in case a scan or defrag is running in the background.

It would help if you could supply specs of your PC.

RAM, CPU, Hard drive free space, etc.
We can see you are on XP SP3 but more info would help.

In Windows Task manager, how many processes are running at normal running?

What is the CPU usage at normal running?

This info will help others ore expert than I am.

RAM was the reason for checking on Startup. Too little and everything comes to a halt until some RAM gets freed up to allow more programs to load.
( You know that 'bazza. For Mooses info.)

You would think as much trouble as I have had in the past I would have remembered to include that info huh? Sorry!

    Here's the scoop:

    Microsoft XP Pro
    Version 2002 SP3

    CPU: 1.79 GHz
    RAM: 2 GB
    7 GB of free space

I disabled all programs in the startup thru WinPatrol and there is nothing in the scheduler.

There are 35 processes running but Ive seen it in the 50s at times.
CPU Usage runs anywhere from 5% to 25% normally but shoots to 95-100% during Photoshop or audio is played.

Anything else I can give to help out?

Thanks for the help in advance!

7GB of free space ain't much. Are you sure that is correct (I guess so}:-D
Just out of curiousity, how many GB's is your hard drive?

Other MG'ers please step in from here on.

Yes, can you free up some of that hard drive space.

You say you disabled ALL startup programs in Winpatrol, any improvement?

If you boot into safe mode, what is CPU usage then?

You have a lot of extra services running. Why do you use Bonjour? Also, Spybot S&D has been know to cause conflicts. I would uninstall that and use SuperAntiSpyware in it's place. Follow the instructions:
    http://forums.majorgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=127217
Then I would follow the instructions from www.blackviper.com to clean up my services. I always choose the "safe" column.
If the above, including freeing up the HD and then doing a defrag, doesn't work, I'd go through the steps from the Malware removal:
    http://forums.majorgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=35407

At idle, no windows open, no scans, updates, etc., CPU usage should be at or near zero. :wave:wave

Unfortunately, 7GB is correct. Doing a lot of work with graphics and audio, that stuff adds up quickly. Im moving it off but I will say that the issue just popped up one day. Everything was running good and in the middle of a session (I was just listening to audio) is when the stuttering began and hasnt stopped since.

I'm VERY close to saying screw it and starting over from scratch but I obviously would not want to do that....

I disabled all in startup except for WinPatrol and no improvement. Safe mode I havent tried but I will in a few minutes...

As far as the BonJour.....I have no idea what it is...didnt know I was "using it". I see its Apple related and I dont use anything Apple related with the exception of iTunes and the occasional QuickTime movie. I assume I can delete the Bonjour then??

Yes, remove any program with Apple in it, I've found that to produce sluggishness. At this time I'd include the itunes and quicktime programs as well. You can always get them back later is you want.
I saw an almost identical situation on a computer once that was solved by getting rid of just these programs.

Not sure if it gives you the option, but you didn't disable your antivirus, Norton, did you? :wave:wave

brandpeppy, those problems with Spybot Search and Destroy (SSD), in the link you provided are 6 years old. It had problems with one or two updates way back then.

SSD has certainly progressed since then. I have been using SSD for over 6 years and am still using it with no problems.

It may be an old thread but it is a sticky written by Chasalang for the purpose of how to use SAS for a Malware check. And these stickies are kept updated, though the original date doesn't change. It had nothing to do with SSD.

I've just have seen other people here have problems with SSD conflicts and thought it should be one area to explore for the OP. :wave:wave:wave

To Kevgeez, I assume you are new to the forums, you really are supposed to start a new thread and not hijack an existing one. Everybody's situation is unique and advice given to another may or may not pertain to you. But if you start a thread, I'm sure you will find plenty of help! So feel free to post it! :wave:wave
