I removed a 2.2 GHz Celeron from a Gateway ES2 300X and replaced it with a 2.6 Ghz Celeron. I upgraded the BIOS, and the info on the Gateway support site did not show any 2.6 GHz Celerons in the list. It did list many 2.6 GHz P4's and 2.8 GHz P4's. It also listed 2.4GHz Celerons.

The 2.6 Ghz Celeron I installed has 128KB L2 and a 400MHz fsb, -just like the 2.2 GHz Celeron that came with the computer.

The computer sometimes reboots when its starting up. Also sometimes when I start it up there's an hour glass that never goes away and I have to reboot.

Could these be symptoms of the cpu not being supported by the BIOS?

Did you clear the BIOS (CMOS) before or immediately after installing the CPU?

I didn't clear the BIOS. I replaced it with a newer version.

I (along with some other people here and on a couple other sites I frequent) recently ran into a similar problem with Biostar's P4M900-M4 motherboard. The supported CPU list was rather small and basically if a CPU wasn't on the list, the board would not boot. I swapped in a CPU from the supported list and it's worked fine ever since.
So I would suggest you get a CPU the board supports.
