A friend of mine decided to open the cpu on my old computer which worked perfect and now it wont boot up.
After looking at some stuff on google, i get the impression I need the glue stuff between the heatsink/fan and the cpu before it will work properly again.
    Is it really that simple?
    Thanks everyone. ;)

It sounds like he took the heat-sink off of the CPU?

    If this is the case:
Even without a fresh layer of thermal compound between the two, your computer should still boot. I would check that everything is still hooked up the way it was and that the CPU is still seated properly in the motherboard. If that does not work, we can start the long and drawn out process of elimination, and hope your friend did not break your processor.

The computer seems to start up but doesnt as there isnt anything on the screen. I took a look at the cpu in another computer to see if they were the same and now that one is kerput! the cpu's were both different but they now both dont do anything. sounds like a laurel and hardy caper but its true x2 now. must be the glue thing now as 2 cannot break the same way at the same time????

I hope it's not the case but if you removed the CPU from it's mount and have accidentally put it back in the wrong position or it was not seated correctly you could have damaged the tiny pins on the motherboard and if that has happened it's a new mobo.

Sorry if this is bad news, It happened to me once with a very expensive mobo and i bricked it.

Or you can just check that your freind has not unseated the graphics card.

When the fans start up, but the computer itself does not do anything, that usually means that the computer is not POSTing. The POST is the first thing a computer does when it is first turned on to check its own hardware. One cause of the computer not POSTing is a bad or not properly inserted CPU. It sounds like the processors on both computers have been damaged. Sorry.

If it was the thermal compound (what you are referring to as glue), than the computer would start normally for a little bit. However, the CPU would quickly overheat causing the computer to shut down.

One possibility you may consider is if you are testing both computers on the same monitor. Could it be that the monitor is bad?

monitor is fine as it reads - no signal or whatever it says to tell you nothing coming through. I cannot believe 2 computers both broke with the same thing??? I was very carefull with last one and I noticed that you cannot seat the second one wrong as it has a metal housing that then clicks over it afterwards and then the heatsink/fan on top. Im getting the glue stuff tomorrow in the mail but I'm sceptical if it will help now. not sure what else to try aprt from see how far they bounce when I throw them from the top window...................!
