    Hey guys,

A buddy of mine had an eMachines computer that was about a year old. The motherboard went out on it and I replaced it with the exact same model as the burnt out one (MSI brand). The first thing I noticed when plugging it in was that the CPU fan was on even though the power light was off. It operated just like it had before, except the CPU fan stayed on even when the computer was off, as long as it was plugged in. It has an AMD Athlon XP 2000+ Processor, a gig of RAM and a 60GB hard drive.

The other thing I have recently noticed is that, over the last two days, the computer keeps freezing randomly. Sometimes it is right after POST, other times it gets to Windows then freezes. This has been getting worse and worse over the past few days. Now it rarely gets past the "Windows did not start correctly last time" screen without freezing. I am not sure what the problem is, but I kinda suspect the PSU. I think maybe something happened there when the last mobo got fried. The first thing I'm gonna try is to replace the PSU later today.

    Any suggestions?

Thanks for the support....I think...although that doesn't really help my situation.

Fortunately I have stopped the freezing. My buddy tried to put thermal compound on his cpu, and got it all over the place, prolly causing shorts. Now its working fine that I cleaned it off. The fan part, I'm sure, is a motherboard problem that I'm not really worried about as long as it doesn't cause problems.

I once had an Intel Board that did the same thing. I cannot recall what exactly it was I did that fixed it but I do recall messing around with the fan settings in the bios. You may want to have a look there if you know what your doing.

  5. Maybe the systems BIOS system temp warning is set too low. Try going in there and raising that a few settings higher to turn off the fan. Because maybe it thinks the system is overheating because the system warning temp is too low when in reality it is not overheating at all. Try raising the overheat warning temp too see if it shuts down the fan. let us know if this info helps
