Hi, I just got a new cpu for my computer, an amd 4200+ that came with a heatsink and fan. the fan has a 4 pin connector and the motherboard has a 3 pin connector. the pin that won't be used on the fan connector is the yellow wire. should I expect an rpm problem or will this be ok. thanks

yellow wire if i recall correctly is the ground so unless you get a short it shouldnt matter, they do have adaptors for 4pin to 3pin, but im pretty sure you can plug in the 4pina nd be alright

I'd get a 4 pin to 3 pin adapter (a little more money to pay) is better then taking chances on frying your system (overheating your cpu or shorting out your fan).

thanks for the feedback. the red, blue, and black wires look like they will match up on the power and ground. after a little research the yellow wire appears to connect to a sensor on your MB for speed control if it has that option. I'm putting it in today so I hope nothing goes wrong. I'll check the hardware monitor in the bios and see how many rpms the fan is turning. It should be at least 2500 I think and I'll watch it when I apply power. Will post back with results.

Hi, here's something I didn't think of. the new motherboard only has one IDE channel for a master and slave where the one I got now has two ide channels and naturally the primary hard disk and dvd drive are spaced too far apart for the end connector to reach the dvd drive. I can drill a couple of mounting hole in a 5 1/4" drive bay and relocate the hard disk but I have a cooling fan blowing directly on the hard drives so I don't want to do that. guess I'll hold off on this build and order a SATA dvd burner and that will solve this problem. The solution always seems to be MORE MONEY.
