CPU fan won't shut off - starts clicking.

Hello,

My friend has a socket a gigabyte mobo (GA-7N400 Pro 2) running windows xp. we have noticed that after the computer is powered off, the cpu fan keeps spinning and begins making a 'clicking' noise. It does not make the noise when the computer is turned on.

I can turn it completely off by turning off the power switch on the power supply.

So here is what happens in sequence--

1) Turn on computer (normal)
2) Use windows (normal)
3) Turn off computer (normal - except cpu fan does not turn and begins clicking)

I have verified that the clicking is not happening when the pc is on. I have also verified that the clicking is not coming from any other fan.

I am wondering if maybe the motherboard is going bad. It strange to me that the cpu fan is not shutting off.

Any other ideas on how to trouble shoot?

I would suspect a short somewhere on the power cable to the fan with the clicking caused by possible sparking. I would disconnect the fan and then run the PC for a short time (not too long as you don't want to over heat the CPU) then power down. If your clicking has then gone I would replace the CPU fan.

 

I don't know if it helps, but another thing i've noticed is that when the speakers are on, the chirping is quite loud through the computer speakers.

 

And if you mute all sound does it remain?

Did you ever find a solution to this problem? I am having the same problem with the fan and the clicking, only it isn't just the CPU fan but all fans (case and video card) that spin after I power down.
