Have recently bought Toshiba laptop. It was suppost to have a 366Mhz processor but only had a 180Mhz. I have replace the CPU unit with one from a spares machine. The problem I have is the information about the proceesor speed still refers to the 180Mhz processor. Could anyone advise me on what I need to do to correct this?
    Thanks

Is this a Mobile Pentium II processor? If so, try a search on Intel SpeedStep technology for mobile processors. Actually, I'm not so sure P2's had SpeedStep, but what processor speed does it report when you operate on AC power?

Upon further review, I don't think I read your question correctly before replying.

Search google using Toshiba (and your laptop model) and "speed" or "lack of speed" or ".... (insert processor model)". I'm sure something will pop up. Looks to me as though your CPU is throttled back to half speed.:p As a last resort, contact Toshiba.;) As a final final resort, RTM. :D Bazza

Still reports 180Mhz on AC power. Looked at speed step it appears to be for pentium 3 processors. This laptop has an Intel celeron pentium 2.
    Thanks for response

incorrect bios setting?? you could try booting knoppix or something just to see what chip and speed it reports. If it reports the full speed, then its probably windows screwin up...Hope this helps

I had this happen to me working on a Dell latitude w/P3-650Mhz, 256 mb ram. I couldn't get Win2k to install without blowing up although 98SE would install. One of the indicators was that the machine was indicating the processor as a 500Mhz. The solution for me was a bad stick of RAM. I downloaded "Memtest86" and ran it. The problems all showed up above the 128mb mark so the problem was with DIMM "B."

I pulled DIMM "B", retested everything with only 128mb installed and everything straightened right up. Win2k installed fine and the proccessor was now being reported correctly @ 650Mhz. I couldn't beleive it myself.

Give it a whirl, its free. God Bless.
