Hi i am running an AMD 6400 dual core and it keeps maxing out on both cores and can not find a reason behind it.

Checked through BIOS the temp of the cpu and showed at 51C after a lock up. I am not sure on the cause of the program can you please advise on what this could be.

Graphics drivers are up to date and i am using a 9800gt 512MB i have 4 GB of ram at the moment.

Any further information required let me know and i will post it. Also if there are any diagnostic tools i should look into using to find issues on my pc please advise but be aware i have no floppy drive on this pc.

    Thanks all.

    Welcome to Major Geeks.
Try checking Task Manager to see what is using your CPU cycles.
Could be some background program running(AV scan, updater, etc..)

    Hey there,

    Please advise of
Operating system - Windows version and service pack.
Antivirus / malware protection - "running more than one at a time can cause all sorts of "fun"

Try pressing CTRL + ALT + DELTE to get to "Task manager" in the box that - opens look at the tabs - see the Process's tab - select this. Be careful in here dont go crazy o.k stopping things in here using "end process"

Have a look at the cpu field in the process tab... see which application or service is using up the cpu - its measured as a percentage btw, and can be selected to change the view of least or highest cpu usage by clicking on the the text "cpu"

    As an example...
I have had an issue with Comodo antivirus doing this to me recently 50% CPU usage and another file MsMpEng.exe combined maxing the CPU to almost 100% (Groan) chewing up a lot of cpu resources.

So look for the highest using cpu usage and google the indicated program application or service, see what advice is on offer and go from there...

    G.luck :)

i was running windows Vista but did a format and put on windows 7 made no difference

i disable my AV and still had the same issue i am using kaspersky.

it normally happens while running games but has happened once with the game idle in background while watching a video online.

will monitor for the next time it happens and check the task manager for anything in there as i can't remember off top of my head what was at top, if i remember rite it was split over several different processes.

Make screen pics of task manager when something spikes the CPU, and state what it is meaning what you started, not a hardware problem IMHO.

Try TreeProcess from MS, may give you a better idea. Here's a sample of mine and the vmware-vmx-exe @ %94 is correct as I've loaded the CPU to the max..

ok this is a shot of my process list but by time i got it up it had gone back to normal

I saw that it was spread over 5 different proesses but nothing out the norm.

Anyone know any diagnostics software that will check for errors on CPU, HDD or GPU because i think its hardware due to reformat and different OS and still having same problem.

Do you think it could be weak power supply or faulty HDD?

In that WOW is using over 72% of the CPU. The next highest, audio device grab is using over 10%.

Here's a fix for the glitch where audio device grab uses too much of the CPU in Vista and Win 7

You might want to do a bit of searching and find other solutions.

It is perfectly normal for cores to max out while playing games.

That is by design. Besides, who does not want their computer to give them 100% performance when playing a game?

I agree WoW is taking up 72% of resources, if it was running at 20% you'd be locking up, lagging and choppy in the middle of a raid.......booted.

In the first screen System Idle is at 92% which looks fairly good.

You seem to be hitting "bottlenecks", i.e. the limitations of your processor, RAM and Video Card and you can't get that much more out of it, unless you become an OC fiend.......;-) (only for the very experienced who can afford to pay for what they break!).

Its very strange though the spec of the pc crush the minimum requirements for all games i play. It never used to happen before but now it is.

The ram i am using a two sticks of 2gb and the maker is someone called GEIL, not heard of them before personally. Another strange thing is vista says there is 4gb installed but only using 3gb of it not 100% sure why this is.

The system should not have problems with what i am playing as a friend of mine has a lesser spec of computer and still has no issues on the same games. I was thinking it could be my HDD because it is making a noise every now and then of a Giga-counter possible is faulty. Am taking in the pc for a diagnostic check at the store i got it from unless you guys know of any diagnostic software to try. I had Sisoftsandra how ever its spelt and a business addition but that did point its finger at anything as it throws that many figures and such at you that i couldn't understand it (i can build PCs but those figures made me go o.0 lol)

If you know any diagnostic systems i should run to maybe find errors on the pc that would be helpful as to me it looks like hardware issue due to reformat and different OS used. This is just getting really annoying as i spent £490 on this system and now am having problems with it which i thought i wouldn't have due to the specs of the system.

Also just wanna say thanks to everyone replying and helping :)

Oh and when i say using 100% of the CPU i mean its making the whole pc lock up Adrynalyne it is nice for pc to use the core to its most but not when it causes a full system lock up and i can't do anything lucky i got task manager screen shots as before when i minimized it either fixes the issue or takes 1-2 mins and then its fine.

Still another reason for possible hardware related :cry

    Wow

Damn your English and yet your capacity with the language is appalling, (not blaming you but the education system!!).

Now let's talk like "lad's": damn I suspect you have some "shite" running on your system which is taxing you majorily! You probably got some nasty crap on there that you ain't even aware off!

I'd say you at least have some form of zombie or bot on that sucker which is kicking in at the worst time and taking your "system resources".

You need to run this thread and remove the crap:

Take shortcuts and the crap'll still b thr.......do it.

Sorry bout last post but I am in work so had to make it fast and didn't think you would take that much offence to it really.

I will run everything i can from that link you put and check for those issues but I have reformatted the pc and installed a different OS but could still be something on there will let you know how I got on.

Before you bring it in to the shop, run the hard drive makers testing utility and test and bring back to factory condition, nothing will survive that. Use Memtest86+ in the download section hereto test your memory, it will take a while. Good luck.

I wouldn't doubt playing wow, and running a video would sap the computer resources.

Though, I wonder what WOW looks on my system, though, I've optimized wow to utilize more of my cores. (i920@4ghz)

If its a problem--simply assign WoW to one core.
