I had a newer e-machines computer and the motherboard got fried. I took the cpu out of it and tried to put it in my slightly older Compaq Presario 4090US. They both have the same cpu sockets, but I hooked it up and it didn't do anything at all, the power supply came on, but that was it. Then I put the old cpu back in it after it didnt work, and the harddrive came on too, but the computer would not work. The light comes on and the fan runs as well as the hard drive, but the screen is stil black, and it never loads anything. I dunno what happene so any support would be much appreciated.
The processors are a 900mhz AMD Athlon to a 2200+ AMD Athlon XP. Feel free to email me with any questions or answers. Thank You, Robert Shaw

If the motherboard is blown, then it needs to be replaced. Just changing the CPU won't help.

I guess I didn't explain that quite right. I was putting the E-Machines Cpu into my older Compaq. It worked fine, but I wanted to upgrade it.

Possibly the old mobo doesn't support the new athlons, not sure though, would have to know what mobo it is.

    Hi,

That model presario supports a duron processor not a athlon xp, I don't think you can get it to work.

This is a link were you can download the manual for the 4090us. You now need to clear the cmos to get the original processor to work.

Unplug the computer from the wall outlet, move a jumper on the mobo(this is why you need the manual) wait a couple minutes then move the jumper back, this will clear the cmos back to original and the computer should boot.

You can also do this by removing the battery but it is better to use the jumper. Try this and post back

you can also get a new mobo for the emachine fairly cheap and use all the other parts

I appreciate the help alot, but it didn't work. The manual only shows how to plug the speakers and junk in. it doesnt show how to reset the cmos, I found the only jumper on the mobo, and moved it, but it didn't fix the problem. Any other suggestions, or is there another jumper on the mobo somewhere?

Just remove the battery it will do the same thing as the jumper

I removed the battery, but it did the same thing. Right when I turn it on, the loading light comes on for about a second, then it goes out and nothing ever loads. The hard drive is running, the cd drive will open, but it never does anything. The fans are running also. Is there anything else that could make it not boot up like that? If not, is there another way to maybe redo the cmos, I have another computer running that has xp on it, but the cmos wouldn't be the same would it? Any help will be much appreciated.

Ok, with what you describe the cmos is ok and should be back at default.
Do you have any video at all? Does it show a compaq logo and any post info when you first start the computer? Do you have a video card or is it onboard video?

The video is onboard. Nothing comes up on the screen at all. The monitor clicks once, and that's it. I have a old video card laying around, i thing i am going to see if the monitor will work for it. Thanks, Robert

Yea the onboard video may have problems, try a different video card and also try another monitor.

    Let us know what happens

I used a different monitor, and a different video card today, and it does the same thing. Could the cpu be fried somehow?

Hard to say for sure, I would guess the mobo first. The only other think I can think to check is make sure the cpu is in the socket correctly and there are no bent pins.

I just read over the hole thread and let me clarify some things and help you understand what I am thinking. The cmos is a onboard chip that contains the bios(basic input/output) the bios is a set of instructions that tells the computer how to boot to the operating system. I don't think you can replace this chip on a compaq. I suspect the bios somehow got corrupted, either by static elec. from not being grounded when working inside the computer or from installing the wrong cpu. In simple terms we say the computer won't post.

This is only my opinion and I hope someone else has another idea

    Rick
