I have a p4 2.8 ghz and was just wondering what is the optimum temp. Mine is running at 78+ which I know is bad so I just bought a new heat sink and the compound for it. But, it would be nice to know what I should be shooting for.

    35 to 45 is good.
    50's not to bad.
    78 is dangerous.

It would have me worried anyway.

Thanks guys. I went out last night and just got a new heatsink and the arctic compound. Temp went straight to 33 so it is all good now. I had been trying to figure out why I was randomly shutting down and I guess that was the issue hehe.

You should grab a diagnostic app so you can monitor temp while in OS. There are many here, but I would go with EVEREST Home:

Just monitor your BIOS for the next week (from time to time) to make sure temps are good etc and compare with EVEREST (so you know software is good). Its' easy to not plug in the CPU fan properly and 2 days later have temps elevate.
