cpu usage 100%

Hi. I am having a problem and I would like to see if you can help. When I boot up my son's cp it gets as far as the wallpaper and that's it. The desktop does not appear. I can get to the taskmanager and it shows the cpu usage is at 100% and winlogon at 99%. The only part of safe mode I can get into is the command prompt and from there I can get into regedit, but I'm lost without that desktop. I've tried to run spybot and ad-aware from the command prompt but cannot get it to work. I have no idea what I'm doing. OS is windows 2000 professional. Any suggestions????

You may be infected with Klez:

See if you can run services.msc from Safe Mode Command Prompt and check for a WINKxxx.EXE service.

3. Browse the list of running services for the following service

WINKxxx.EXE
where xxx is two to three random characters appended to the word "WINK" -- for example, WINKAP.EXE, WINKZFU.EXE, or WINKNWK.EXE.

If this service is listed, the computer may be infected with a variant of the Klez worm program.

And as Alan says, if you are Klez-ridden then Stinger will clean it up for you. If you can run Singer from safe mode that is (after you turn off system restore).
