    Help!!

    Call me "Desperado"

I have done everything listed on your clean-up page to no avail. It took almost 3 days to complete all tasks. I'm sure I have the cleanest machine in my area...but the slowest. It takes at least 10 minutes before I can open anything after I start the machine. When I go to task manager I have no applications running. I googled all processes and none are "red flagged". I use both Norton Premier 2005 and Norton Internet Security on this machine. I also run Ad-Aware SE and Spybot Search and Destroy on a regular basis. This problem occured "out of the blue" several days ago. I tried to use "Go Back" to an earlier time and it didn't help. I've used "System Restore" to try to go to earlier times but still nothing. Thank you for any advice.

Here are the specifics on my machine:

    Windows XP Pro SP2 installed
    Asus P4C800-E Deluxe MoBo
    512 Corsair 2700 LL Memory
    P4 Norwood 2.8 Chip
    Western Digital Raid 0 drive

okay you did the clean up that's fine but how many running processes do you have ???

To know hold ctrl-alt-delete one time ; you should be around 25 processes....

if you have like over 50 or something you have some problem there
    do a clean if possible....

to knows what the processes do and definitions go there:

    hope this help

I have 42 processes running but several are associated with Norton. I googled and checked all processes in the website you mentioned. There was only one that was suspicious: lsass.exe. After much research, it seems this is a windows process when the first letter is an l (L) and a virus when it's an I. Even if this were the problem, wouldn't it have been picked up by the several scans I did??

    Thanks,

    GSC

I have re-read your post carefully and i am pretty sure now it is
your norton stuff that is doing your slow down......

The thing you could try is to try uninstalling your norton stuff....
    and see if this help....

i knows it's pain in the *ss but you will be sure it's not that.....

I already had this problem when i remove my norton anti-virus...

I think i double my speed i am using NOD32 now and very happy about it :)

I agree with Clark_Kent. Ditch Norton, as their products are resource hogs especially on older machines, and insert themselves into every possible part of your OS. There are freeware alternatives that offer better performance, leaner footprints, and superior detection capabilities, in my opinion, and are available on the MajorGeeks download page. I was a long time Norton user, before the activation feature in 2004 edition, and yes, I did pay for the program. I dislike any type of necessary activation to use the product when I have paid for it, and have a boxed Norton 2004 antivirus, which I have never installed on anything.
I prefer Avast for an antivirus application and Sygate for a firewall. Opinions on the forum will vary as to AVG and Avast for antivirus, and for Sygate vs ZoneAlarm for a firewall. Hope this helps! :)

I have a problem exactly as described above. However mine started happening after I did the first step of how to remove malware via using SAS SuperAntiSpyware, the machine got very very slow. First hint was it would take forever to get to the login screen. I am confident that my machine is clean (I followed the same procedure on a W2k machine and the machine is now clean). I have followed all the steps and no malware is in my machine. My first impression was there still exists a malware and was not detected but re run of various malware removal tools incdicates otherwise.
    Win XP SP3
    AMD 2600+
    1.25GB RAM
My thread is located under syspools and other *.t
My help on the malware side indicated this could draw some attention
    on the software thread!
    Thanks
