CPU usage, when printing......

    ....is close to 100%. Is this normal? It seems to have no other negative effects.

    Yep!

    I've noticed that parallel prining seems to have a bigger hit on CPU useage than USB, as well.

    Ya, I agree with the above. I have an old 9 pin and it does the same thing. I never did find a fix for the problem and just gave up and bear with it. Unless you have a newer one.

    Depending on how large the job is, the CPU may spike to 100%, but will not stay there. The PrintSpooler would not cause it to stay that long, unless there is some other activity going on.
