    Interesting situation...

Dell Dimension 4400 running WinXP Pro with a Belkin NIC card connecting to the LAN and Internet just fine.

Reformatted HDD, installed WinXP Pro and upgraded with the Service Patch 2 seemed fine until I got into Windows... system now not connecting to LAN or Internet.

Device Manager shows Netcard working fine. Have tried adjusting settings based on other systems on LAN running both WinXP Pro & WinXP Pro w/ SP2 cannot seem to get the card firing.

Also, have tried to remove netcard to other slot, remove/reinstall, refresh device... no go.

    Any hints?

do a start run, cmd, then type in ipconfig and post that information for me, if you get nothing then its diffinatly a problem with the nic.

bgunn, You said you formatted and reinstalled XP? Could it be possible that the driver XP decided to use on your Belkin card is the problem? Try finding the manufactures driver from the internet and using that one when you reinstall the card again. Unless your card got physically damaged Ill be willing to bet that's what the issue is.

    Dedub....
yes, when I reformatted and reinstalled the CPU with WinXP Pro it idd automatically installed the netcard. Remember, I was using WinXP Pro on this very same system before BUT did not have the SP2 and the netcard was installed well after the installation of WinXP Pro.

I will try this... remove the netcard, "delete" the netcard adapter from the system and attempt to reinstall the netcard and then the driver supplied with the card.

One more caveat: when I started having this problem and referred to the install manual for the Belkin netcard, it shows that if you are installing this card on a system with WinXP (home or pro) -- it will automatically detect and install.

But again, I will try the above. Might contact Belkin as well.

    Different system/Similiar issue:
And while I have your attention, we recently purchased a new Dell Dimension 4700 with WinXP Pro/SP2, this of course, has an intergrated NIC card. This too has been having issues connecting to the LAN/Internet!!! Not truly sure why and Dell techs have not been much help. Their hardware tech seem to think its a software issue.
It shows that the card is fine with no probs in Device Manager but just will not fire online. Dell sent out a replacement MB, once installed was working great but within a couple of days -- it was dead again.

So I am quite puzzled. To me there does not seem to be anything in the SR2 Firewall area blocking the system(s). Cards are reading as being just ducky. Have tried different Cat5 lines, different connection points on the LAN, deleting net adapters and rebooting system.... no luck, no clue, nothing. Dell couldn't even tech it....!

So whatever you toss my way, I will try. Need to get these systems running and running right.

    Thanks again

lets start with the basics. Do you have a link light, if so... can you ping the loopback 127.0.0.1. If you have a link light and can ping the loopback then assign an IP like 192.168.1.1 or one in your routers subnet and ping that. If that works then ping the router. If you can ping your router, modem then the problem lies outside your computer (probably). I have re-read your post and I did not see anything about the type or network you are on, home, work ect... Are you even using a router? By not being able to connect to the Lan what exactly does that mean? You have no routes, cant get an IP, cant ping?

    hopefully we're getting closer

Well, where do I begin... the problem is solved. Very confused but I removed the network adapter from the Device Manager, then physically removed the Belkin Netcard and installed the previous netcard that I seemingly had to replace a few weeks ago because it stopped "working". Anyway, installed the NetGear card and rebooted.
WinXP found the card and installed it without any notice and the system is now back online and on the LAN. Wacky...

I installed the LAN here at our workplace years back and it is such that the CPU connects to a Hub, the hub connects to a Router and the router then connects to the DSL line.

I have seen a number of these systems (about 12 in all) do various things over the years. Connect to the LAN but not the Internet and vice versa. Netcards work in this CPU's No#1 PCI slot but not NO#3. You get the idea... so I have no clue why it did what it did unless when installing SR2 for WinXP Pro, I need to removed the netcard as well?

I have reformatted and upgraded (2) other systems here and whenever I do this sort of stuff I follow a similiar procedure on all. But there is ALWAYS some that pops up and creates a challenge even during the simplist (sp) of procedures.

Thanks for your assistance and if you think of what might have occurred, I am willing to listen.
