I bought a portable MP3 player and was in the process of using it for the first time. I inserted the disc into my computer and then plugged in the USB cable and all of a sudden I got an error message down in the corner with the clock. I remember it said something about a "Power Surge" and it also said something about USB. Then my CPU locked up. I went to reset it, but when I turned it back on it only got to the Compaq logo and then the CPU (the actual CPU, not the speakers) began beeping and that's as far as it gets. I've tried unplugging everything from the CPU except the monitor and I still get the same problem. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    first,
    cpu stands for
    core processing unit.

change out the main power supply.

a capacitor that feeds juice to the harddrive etc. is out.

I'm not too savvy when it comes to getting inside the computer. Is a job like that very expensive or would it just depend on where I go?

Hi m8 ;) can you describe the beeps, number and length, this is an error code hopefully giving us a clue as to the problem

We also need more info about your computer, read the announcement at the top of the forum ;)

Is this a laptop?did the whole screen go blue to report the message, this can happen when the usb ports dont have enough juice to power whatever you have plugged into it if its an older computer :)

It's not a laptop, it's a Compaq Presario 6350US. I never got a blue screen of any kind. When I went to plug in the usb cable for the mp3 player the following things happened all at about the same time; my keyboard & mouse froze up and wouldn't work, a little window popped up in the bottom right hand corner near the clock saying something about USB cable and power surge (i can't remember exactly), and the computer started beeping (not from the speakers, but the actual machine) the beeps were so fast that it almost sounded like a whistle of some kind. Since my mouse and keyboard froze up, I hit the reset button. When I went to turn my computer back on it got to the Compaq logo screen and then the beeping began again and that's as far as it got and it happens everytime I try to turn it back on. I've never had a problem with this USB port before as it's the one I use to plug in my digital camera. It's the one on the front of the computer underneath the reset button. I tried putting in my Windows XP disc as well as the Compaq recovery disc and turning it on, but still get the beeping. Hope this helps.

Normally when you get a continuation of beeps it's because of a key being stuck (you haven't been bashing your keyboard have you ? :) ), sometimes this can cause your computer to not boot but it is a little rare. This would expain why your discs would not work as for example the key 'ctrl' was stuck down it would give the computer a hard time deciding what to do. I dont see how a USB device could cause a power surge since the computer supplies power to the USB device (in most cases).

No, there's no stuck keys. I've tried unplugging the mouse and keyboard (and everything else for that matter) and still get the same problem. When I turn it on it beeps once and then the continuous beeping begins within about three seconds. I'm going to try to get a hold of someone today to come look at it. But any more advice is still greatly appreciated and thanks so far for the help.
