Hi, New here so I am not sure if this will make any sense! I am having problems when playing a DVD movie through Windows Media Player, the film plays relatively OK but the Audio is aweful, it crackles and makes all sorts of noice, I have a Samsung DVD reader if that is the right term for it and I have installed recent firmware.... Can anyone help?

What about other sounds on the PC? If you're gaming or watching on-line videos, is the sound normal? Have you tried a different media player? Try using VLC Media Player. It's a free and VERY popular media player that can play just about type of media file. Give it a go and let us know what happens! How do audio CDs play? I'm thinking maybe the lens on the DVD drive may be scratched or dirty. If the only sound problems come from discs, then this is a possibility. A faulty data cable (or loose data cable) may also be responsible....

If you checked your data cable to the drive, and replaced it with a new one (use an 80pin cable if it's an IDE drive), then it could be the drive is dirty (not likely, but possible) or it's starting to die. If it's an older drive, it may need a 4pin audio cable like this one, about $1-$2 at any PC store. New DVD burners can be had for about $30 at Newegg, but if you can, you should buy it from a local independent PC store. Figure on paying about $40-$50 for a new DVD burner at your local PC store. You might be able to get a used one for little $$$ but keep in mind it is used which may spell trouble in the future.
