I was installing something within a ZIP file so I stuck it on my desktop temporarily and extracted it. Now I have hundreds of icons!!! :-D

On top of it, accidentally duplicated them all (meant to drag and drop into recycle bin but I missed)

Sounds like you have some work to do.:-D Did a similar thing in my pics. Was trying to put them in a zip file for the first time ever using it and realized I had copy 50 pics.Delete 50 times. (was a new computer then)

    Hi n00b,
    Brilliant Aimee.
I could never understand why people need to have so many things on their desktop

Usually I only have the icons in the first column and on the right.

Usually my desktop is used as the "temp" folder, just because it's easy to access the stuff on it :)

Bummer, you'll be busy for a while.

My computer crashed a few times and reinstalling the OS tripled my Docs and Pictures so I can sympathize with you :(

A word of caution re: Clone Spy.

I myself have used this program for many years and really like it! It is far more accurate than others I have tested, of which I think is every stand alone program of this type available. However, I have had instances where it flagged files as duplicates when they were not. Granted, I have thousands of uninstalled fonts, patterns (crochet, knitting, etc.) and various graphic things I use to the tune of 65g last time I looked.

My point is, be sure to use the custom options/settings which I have found gives better, more accurate results. Use the 'move to folder' option so you can quickly check to make sure the files are in fact duplicates. You have more viewing options if the files are in a folder rather than the recycle bin so you will be able to review them more quickly.

Change the default report setting from immediately display equal files to wait until all files are scanned other wise you could be dealing with the individual results for what seems like hours.

If scanning your system/program files be extremely cautious. Often your system and various programs will use for example the same .dll or .txt file but it needs to be in more than one folder for proper execution. Deleting just one could cause program or operating system instability or break something within a program that you may not notice for quite some time.

Clone Spy is a great little app :major but really not for the average computer user.:)

Abby Sue I have tons of pics that are bogging my desk top down and I plan on transferring them to dvd as was suggested to do. I know I have copies upon copies because i don't want to mess the original up so I copy and use it to edit for various things that way if I mess up I can start over with another copy. Can I use this clone spy to fine these copies and delete them or is there another program out there just for that?

Oh wow Aimee. That's... bad. Really bad.

Suggestion: Hold down Shift and then click and hold left mouse. It will highlight multiple files that you drag the cursor over, and then you can just hit Delete to get them to your Recycle bin.

That might make it easier for you to clean up the mess you just made ;)
