Crashed for the third time in about a month :(
I never did get it back to normal either time before.

On a black screen it reads - NTLDR is missing press Ctrl+Alt+Del to restart,
    that does nothing

For the third time I reinstalling XP. there was an option to repair, I pressed that once and it asked what I wanted repaired, :confused I don't know so opted to install the whole thing all over (again)

What am I doing to loose this NTLDR ? what is it by the way?

I'm on Dan's PC have to stay near mine as it asks a question now and then but will be back in a bit to see if anyone has any solutions. Thanks :wave

Might be this Darlene but wait for one of the MajorGeeks to direct you. I'm not sure.

See "(MS XP) 2. After you log on to the new installation of Windows XP, take ownership of the original system root folder, and then assign the appropriate permissions. To do this, follow these steps:"

Thanks Cat, got it up again, dozed off while it did 57 updates
The link you gave, I lost it at
( b. Expand My Computer, expand the drive that contains the original system files, right-click the drive that contains the original system files, and then click Properties. )
thought it ment C but evidently not.

Sorry I mislead you, tried it too from step 2. - no go. Have to start from 1.
Start the computer by using a Windows XP ASR set.

But all said above I missed the target too :( This looks more like your problem:

    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/320397/en-us

But again, someone that knows this error can most likely give you a quicker fix that all that.

Thats ok I appreciate your help, I looked at the new link, makes me feel like I've had a stroke, all greek or geek to me.
Seems like each time I download Service Pack 3 is when the trouble begins

If you are able to boot from an xp cd, I've found that using the repair console, and typing the command chkdsk /r at the prompt has fixed that issue. However, Im not sure if theres another fix for it.

Another problem I have is - after I reinstall the operating system it's like new except I do have my documents and pictures, just have to hunt for them.
I can move them back into my documents but as for my programs that show in Disc C do not seem to be operatable, had to download some over again, then they produce a new folder of the same name. Now thats not making sence to me!
    Be back after more coffee

What is the repair console, how do I locate it and is it only usable while the xp cd is in?
    Thank you

It can be run from CD or be installed on the PC but believe it will still ask for the disk to repair an error. Chkdsk will run w/o CD but Recovery seems to need a disk to repair, never had to repair anything though.

    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/307654/

But if you only get error with SP3, might be an altogether different issue. Does error come up with SP2 at all?

Sorry I'm taking so long to respond, getting sick with a cold :( the kind where you can't see out of one eye due to the watering :cry

Anyway tried to do the Chkdsk and it couldn't for some reason right then but said it would the next time it was started. It ran but I have no idea of the outcome. Would it have made a log some where?
Also so far I have not installed Service pack 3, seems before right after that it went down.

It will show ya in the event viewer, under computer management.

Right click My computer, choose manage.

Note...multiple NTLDR errors over a period of time with no obvious reason could point to a failing hard disk.

    Hi Darlene,

Have you gotten the error since the last install?

Also you can sort them by "Source" or "Type" by clicking on the Tab at the top of the list. Just easier to find things that way for me.

No ok so far (knock wood) by looking at that I can't tell anything about the error. I depend on the computer to run and fix itself, it pretty much does huh? Takes me hours to fix the simplest thing, suppose people like me shouldn't even be on em. :(
Thank you for your help :)

    Can you try this?

    http://xphelpandsupport.mvps.org/how_do_i_correct_an__ntldr_or_nt.htm

Can you post the text or a screenshots of the following errors (click on them, window will come up)

    6:21:49 App Hang, (101) 1002
    6:22:02 App Hang 1001

We really need someone that's familiar with errors, just going by feeling here.

Don't let it get you down Darlene, your PC is in a funk, not your doing. This error is a hard one to pin down sometimes, looked for awhile last night. Some it was motherboard, some just replaced the file, others said driver caused it.

App Hang errors are not going to be the issue here with NTLDR issues. App Hang is...well, apps that have locked up/ stopped responding.

Errors that more important right now are going to be in the system event log.

The other times I had to boot from the cd once I chose R then it asked me what I wanted to access - being there was no multiple choice I backed out. I'll try this tomorrow, I'll print it on Dan's PC never set up my printer as yet. I certainly appreciate you helping me out, I tried to find instructions with no luck.

    @ Adrynalyne, thank you also

Is there anything in System yet? Since it's not crashed we're kind of stuck till it does. Forgot to ask did it run the chkdsk on restart and report anything when it was done?

I did run chkdsk, it could not at first for some reason and said it would at restart. I didn't see any explanation afterward but then I don't know where to look.
Did you mean System in here?

It's not you Darlene, it's me...can't seem to focus lately, twisting my own words...too many distractions. No worries, all is well, your making me think, which is good.

Use when/if it crashes again with the same error "NTLDR is missing press Ctrl+Alt+Del to restart" Easier fix than a complete reinstall, hopefully.

Re the chkdsk log it's an entry named Winlogon under Application in the Event Viewer (where you are for the above screenshots) also know as "C:\bootex.log" this file is deleted after chkdsk runs and Windows is restarted, unless you save file as a different file name (don't worry about it).

I ran chkdsk and have an entry "Winlogon" in the Event Viewer under Applications, you should too.

Right click My Computer > Manage > Event Viewer > Application
Click upper title heading "Source" (will sort by Alpha) find "Winlogon"
Click on it > Click on the Clip Board pic (under the arrows) it will copy the log, then you can paste into Notepad and attach to your next post.

Chkdsk made minor adjustments and corrections to my file system, so maybe we will get lucky and whatever went wrong with yours was corrected, the log might tell us something too.

We're getting there, keep your chin up :)

Just a PS to you Cat, don't let me keep you from your distractions, it's running for me so far (knock wood) I found an anti virus on one of my CD's too so I feel better about that.
My family thinks I'm a genius because I explain to them how to do the simplest of things, like delete temp files, roflmao thought you'd get a kick out of that.

You're doing my distractions a favor, they would not like my full attn. at the moment *grins* Plus I find problems interesting and my desktop was due for a check-up anyhow.

Log looks good to me, there are no bad sectors or errors. Only thing I see different from my log is that chkdsk moved 3x the amount of files around. I think its fine.

More I read on this error, I think we did all we can. This issue will most likely be revisited when you try to reinstall SP3 again, it’s a common problem with SP3 but let's try to avoid it next time.

Suggestions to avoid a repeat are:

    1. Check for updates prior to installing SP3 from Win Update. (think you did that)

    2. Install SP3 from CD or .iso, you can order CD from MS for $10 w/shipping or download a .iso file. Disconnect from the internet and stop/quit all virus/spyware, firewall any unnecessary programs prior to installing. *resume security programs prior to connecting back to the internet.

    Order CD:

Is the Service Pack 3 really necessary?

About the anti virus, It is offered along with our IP, after the crash, forget which one rolleyes , I tried to download it but couldn't. I uninstalled everything I could find related to it but still when I tried to download it said there was already a version on my computer.
I contacted ATT tech on line, went through three different techs, I think I could work there :-D
Anyway, on a CD (Microsoft Works Suite) one of the programs on there is Norton 2003.

  32. Cat_w_9_lives

    Cat_w_9_lives Major KittyCat

Yep, think we need SP3...don't think they developed it unless they thought it was needed.

Did you try the Norton Removal Tool here: http://www.majorgeeks.com/Norton_Removal_Tool_SymNRT_d4749.html

I see where you're going with this, Norton is now the Online Security provider for ATT/Yahoo, do you have DSL...think so. Not sure your plan will work though, I remember when CA was the Security provider it was a different version than the paid public one. Plus it's the 2003 Norton, don't think it will update to 2008, in order to get it free, you have to go though ATT and log in. Also you could try calling ISP and telling you can't download it, might send you the CD.

Think best way to get your Norton back is to use the removal tool, run CCleaner for anything left over in the Registry and try to install the IP version again.

P.S. Also, you might be better if you ran the Norton Tool, cleaned with CCleaner, tried the install of SP3 one more time before you install Norton again - it's the Security Suite from what I see and it might be what was giving SP3 a fit. But conflicted on this one...don't want you without security either. Do you have a firewall on?

ok, just checking, surf safe till this is resolved and be careful with mail. I guessing you're familiar with Norton and like it. Look at your options and pick what's works best for you. If you can't get Norton to download you have other options for anti and firewall.
