Crashed XP, can I switch to Linux?

My daughters notebook running windows XP home crashed. She doesn't have the CD (of course) and can't afford to buy it or pay someone to fix it. Can she just install a free version of linux without fixing windows? If so what version and where do I get it? Thanks

You can download about anything but if you don't have a broadband connection, I would buy it cheaply online or get it in a Linux magazine at the bookstore.

You can get an OEM XP Home for less than 90 USD at Newegg.com. I mention that in case your daughter doesn't like Linux.

 

Why not contact the laptop manufacture - most will ship you a free recovery disk or have you pay shipping... worth a shot.

 

Well, I downloaded Ubuntu and burned it, but I'm ashamed to admit, that it must be way beyond me, 'cause I can't even figure out how to install it! Any tips?

 

Before you jump in with both feet try a Live CD first which runs totally from CD so you don't mess more with your notebook. At least you get a taste of what Linux is like.
