Crashing & burning in Cyberspace

Wasn't sure whether to post this in "games" or "software" section...

    My problem:
I've had LOTRO and Firefox closing down on me recently with the message that lotro.client (or Firefox) has encountered a problem and has to close. Not a power outage or BSOD, thank heavens, but annoying nonetheless.

    What I've done so far:
I've scanned for malware with Commodo & MBAM and found nothing.

I've "submitted" my crashes each time and tried to find the logs in my Local Settings folder; however, even when I look through "hidden" files, I cannot seem to locate them.

    My machine:
    Dell XPS DXPO51
    Intel Pentium D
    CPU 2.8 GHz
2.79 GHz, 3.25 GHz of RAM

    Windows XP
    ver 2002
    Service Pack 3

My knowledge/experience with the internal function of computers is limited (but growing, thanks to your fantastic forums). I've provided as much information as I could, but will provide anything else needed. Any advice on which way to turn would be appreciated so my little hobbit will be (relatively) safe to battle evil monsters once again. ;)

    Thank you!!

    ~Amy

    Hi Amy.

    In Firefox Go to..
    Then select...
Is that what your looking for?

Thanks, Q, for the quick response.

The Error Console has a long list of "Error in parsing value for [curser/font]. Declaration dropped." I'm not sure what that means, but it looks like html errors or something, not the problem causing my computer to crash.
When I log in to LOTRO, for instance, I may take three steps and boom...back to desktop. Firefox has lasted longer (I've managed to type this far, for example), but there doesn't seem to be any history in the Error Console to show me why it crashed earlier.

I just want to know what is going on, so I can find out how to fix it

    Try these steps....

First of all DL the latest installer for firefox, flash, java, ccleaner and javara [java uninstaller] and save them to your desktop for easy access.

[if you need to save your firefox passwords and settings, you will need to get Moz-back-up aswell http://majorgeeks.com/Mozbackup_d5822.html let me know if you need any help with that]
    ..
    Ccleaner - http://majorgeeks.com/download4191.htm
    Firefox - http://download.mozilla.org/?product=firefox-3.5.3&os=win&lang=en-GB
    Java - http://majorgeeks.com/Sun_Java_Runtime_Environment_d4648.html
    Flash - http://majorgeeks.com/Adobe_Flash_Player_d5163.html
    [java uninstaller] http://majorgeeks.com/JavaRA_d5982.html

[1] Uninstall Firefox, java and flash player and and run the javara [java remover program]

Then run Ccleaner afterwards - make sure to run the registry option a few times till nothing is found.
[uninstall the game too, BUT only if it is not too much trouble reinstalling it]

    [2] Schedule a CHKDSK ....

    Go to run and type
It will ask you if you want to do it next time you restart, say yes.

[3] Defrag your hard-drive. [DON'T use the built in windows one!]

If you dont already have a good one here is a couple of good free ones...

    Auslogics - http://majorgeeks.com/Auslogics_Disk_Defrag_d5266.html

    Defraggler - http://majorgeeks.com/Defraggler_d5777.html

[4] Re-install Firefox, Flash and Java in that order.

Then lets see where we stand :)

Well, I'm not sure why, but that seemed to do it. I went to sleep last night while Defraggler did it's thing, woke up this morning, reinstalled Firefox, flash and java, and then played Lord of the Rings Online for an hour at least with no crashes.

    Thanks, Q!
