I had to junk my wife's 15 month old HP DV7 laptop because the mother board was dead. I ordered a new XPS 8100 from Dell to replace it. Can I use any of the laptop parts in the desktop?

The laptop disk drive is a Blue-ray CT10L; I didn't order a BD from Dell cause they wanted and arm and a leg for it. Could I use this as an external disk drive? Maybe with a usb adapter?

I also have two 250GB HDD out of the laptop. Could I hadd extra storage space to the desktop with these?

    Thanks

Ther is a usb powered adaptor that you can use for the Blue-ray CT10L.
The hard drive being a laptop is 2.5", and a pc hard drive is 3.5", and all you need to put that into the pc is either a pair of short rails-that allow it to fit into the available bay.
There are othe available fitments, however to enable fiting the extra hard drive into the pc, but I found two rails did the job, when I played with this sort of thing some years ago.
I will come back with some links (I assume your intention is to save spending unnecessarily, at the moment- perhaps replacing, at a later date?)
This model should have an option to boot from usb, as it is a late model.

    Yeh, why not?

Doesn't require any modding, well maybe just a little, but it's very do-able!

First time I have seen that one, -it does say it supports ide, but I could not see a connector, for Ide. As I have not used this type, I cannot offer any help on that one- check out the fittings on the dvd rom, and if there is a fitting on the adaptor, then I would think it worth a try, but unless the hard drive is in a caddy, I feel you might get static damage over a period of time, in keeping handling the hard drive. I only use adaptors without a caddy, if I am just testing something, but it is never a good idea, unless you are very static conscious.:)
