Did you try to change the BIOS to boot from the usb?

I boot my USB Thumbdrive using Ubuntu. http://www.pendrivelinux.com/universal-usb-installer-easy-as-1-2-3/ There are other O/S choices.

An external monitor is a hardware issue, and is "controlled" by that hardware. It really has no bearing on booting.
