Creating ISO-image from a DVD

I need a simple, free program that can create an iso-image from a dvd.
I've heard that LCISOcreator is very light, also ImgBurn is supposed to work. However, can anyone tell me if the output iso-file is different depending on which program I use? Are there any differences in the "quality" of the output file?

Furthermore, is it legal to make a copy of a DVD on your computer's hard disk, if you only use it yourself and not share/spread it to other users?

Is this for movies? If so, I use DVDFab HD to backup my DVDs:

I believe you can copy them as an ISO, but haven't played around with that part yet.

As for it being legal, I do believe you are allowed to make a (1) back-up copy of the DVD if you own it.

    Thanks for the reply.
I have a few more questions about iso-images.
Do they preserve everything that is in the original DVD? I mean, is the quality the same? Is everything included there that is on the DVD? Is there another format that is better and if there is, why is it better?

    Thanks.

I've not yet to experience any quality degradation. At least not from DVDFab HD. For me, after I copy my DVD, I use DVD Shrink to shrink it down to 4.7gig., and that will cause some loss of quality. I could avoid that by using dual layer DVD's. Not sure what you would be trying to accomplish by making an ISO out of the DVD, but I would not think there would be any visible loss of quality from it. If you were to make a copy on DVD, you could buy the dual layer DVD's and have a true 1:1 backup. And yes, all menu items remain. DVDFab HD does not copy extra items such as PDF files (I have seen these as extras for kids. I think Madagascar has it) but if it relates to the movie, it will back it up.
